I was looking at one of these in Walmart over the weekend. They come with a scope, mounts and rings included. If anyone is using one, I'd be interested in hearing your comments. I've never shot one, but I like the way they look.

If you can get by the looks they are perfectly adequate for most any task of a High Powered rifle. Accuracy in the ones that I have shot at the range is on par with most factory rifles. Don't expect to do much if any customizing on it. I believe the barrel is pressed in and I think it is then pinned in. Perfectly safe, it just doesn't lend itself to customizing. If that was the only rifle I could have then so be it and would enjoy many years of hunting. My opinion is to check out the Savages at Wally World, shouldn't be a big difference in the prices and they are generally more accurate(some are very accurate) and you can have the barrels changed in them if so desired. A lot of people say the Savage is ugly, I think it is OK, at least it looks better than the 710. The main thing is to buy something and take it to the range and take it hunting also. In other words shoot it, and then introduce a non shooting friend to a new world of fun.

hey
i had a 710 in .270 with a simmons aetec scope on it
the rifle shot fine for hunting and all around shooting it grouped about 1-1/2 at 100 yds for a 5 shot group it is a good functional rifle
does it shoot like a tikka t3 well no but it also doesnt cost as much as a sako/tikka does either
the remington 710 will be a good budget rifle for hunting/field use they are fine and affordable

I haven't owned one (more on that later), but there's a couple hunters I know that use them and they seem do okay, so the 710 will get the job done. Of course these are the same guys that shoot maybe 10rds per year from tehir deer rifle (just a few to check zero and then however many they shoot at deer), so they're not exactly what I'd call picky.

Personally, I've never been willing to spend my money on a 710, as there's rifles which I feel are far superior in materials and design for around the same price. If you want a good shooting rifle at an affordable price, look at the Savage model 11 (short action) and 111 (long action). They will shoot as good or better than nearly all factory rifles and they're priced reasonably. If you prefer a Remington, I'd save a bit more and get a 700 ADL. IMO, the Savages or 700 ADL are a much better made and will hold their resale value better (from what I've seen, you nearly have to give away used 710s to get rid of them).

I don't remember ever seeing anyone in the areas that I hunt carrying a 710, and I haven't seen one at the range either. I kind of like the blued/walnut look on a bolt gun, but if you're on a tight budget, it's a lot better than nothing.

I am definately not a fan of the 710 which is, in my opinion, Remington's poor decision in an attempt to compete against the lower priced, yet for some reason highly accurate, Savage rifles. Long term reliability and performance is also at issue. For the money, you are better off buying a 700 ADL.

As for the scope, you get what you pay for, and in this instance - junk. If you can spend some more money, at least get the Elite 3200 which is probably the best value out there.

I have somewhat of a hard time expressing my views because I do not want to potentially offend those that buy inexpensive equipment. While I understand that not everyone can afford higher priced rifles and optics, I believe that buying very inexepensive rifles and optics is actually more expensive because you end up having problems and thus wasting your money.

The 710 with cheap scope is about $300 or so. I would think that a 700 ADL would be about $350 just for the gun, and a 3x-9x-40mm Elite 3200 scope would be about $150, so for $500 you get a SOLID value!

Without throwing rocks at any particular rifle, the scopes sold in these packages are not exactly top drawer. Junk would be a better descriptive term for most of them. But, a regional discount chain is selling scoped Savages for less than you can buy the rifle alone for. You can always use the scope for a door stop!

I agree. I had one of the Savage 110 package guns in 30/06. The rifle was ok, the trigger was less than ok, but the Simmons scope that came with it was garbage. I had it for about five years, and just recently sold it.

I got the remington 710 in 300magnum.Its a good shooter,but it could use a make-over.
