Good hunters possess ethics and a sense of "fair chase" as outlined in Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young. Good hunters make sure of thier shot and do not just blaze away in hopes they might hit the animal anywhere. Good hunters are aware that anti-hunting/anti-gun groups just love to get thier hands on garbage like that, it fuels thier cause. ACT RESPONSIBLY if you want to continue to enjoy hunting and shooting.
Keep shooting ,till you run out of bullets or run out of bear.

Gentlemen,

The only thing the Gentleman did different than any other deer hunter who is restricted to using a shotgun is use A 4 1/2 INCH BORE SHOTGUN.

Believe it or not there are places in this country where you may only hunt deer with a shotgun.  His was a big shotgun

He made sure he had a good load, that the deer was in range of his weapon. He made sure he had a safe shooting zone.  He made sure his gun was aimed in.

He acted far more responsible than any number of hunters I have seen over the years shooting at deer from one canyon to the next or with small caliber firearms or with large magazines or MILSURP rifles and ammo.

As far as a sense of fair chase goes if he shouldn't have shot the deer where he was with the cannon, would it have been any more fair chase to shoot it with a rifle or bow from the same place at the same time.  Rifle, shotgun and bow hunters have the advantage, they could swing, making it more difficult for the deer to escape.  With the cannon the deer could only be in one spot for him to shoot, that's not blazing away.  How much fairer chase can you get than that.  Try locking your rifle down so it only shoots to one spot and hope a deer steps there.

Every thing about this hunt says ethics.  He planned every step he covered every angle. He took far greater steps to assure success than an a lot of hunters do.  It was far more difficult for him to hunt this deer than it would be for a rifle or bow hunter.  It was far fairer chase for the animal.

As far as giving the anti's ammunition, the mere fact we are out there is all the ammunition they need.  In the effort to be  "sensitive" and "politically correct" we are being driven into hiding. We attack each other and question another ethic's and the anti's love that.  If we are hidden then those who might be persuaded to join us aren't aware of us.   I have no shame in hunting.  I don't look for perceived wrong's.

I was an archer for about 10 years..  I have killed animals with an arrow.  I don't like the way an arrow kills. I will not critize an archery hunter!

I will not critize this hunter either!

DD,

You made some good points....but I still think its a little "over-kill". However, I guess if its legal in his state then I guess he can do it, but in my mind there's something not right about it.

Respectfully,
Dave

Dave it's a stunt.  It's not something I would do either.  But I wouldn't use a 338 Ultra mag to shoot deer at 40 yards from a tree stand either.

I wonder how many days he had to wait to get the shot>
