Hi everyone, I have some 30-40 krag ammo and no gun, so I have been thinking of getting a encore barrel in the 30-40 Krag. Has anyone had this barrel and what do you think of the cal.? I do not need a 300yd gun as I will not take a shot at over 150 to 175 yds. This is my personal limit. I know it is bad when i want to buy a new barrel just because I have the ammo.

I'm not sure what factory ammo is loaded to, velocity wise. But the Hodgdon manual shows it slightly more than the 30-30. Handloaded in the Encore it is possible to get very close to .308 performance though. But it should do just fine as is, out to 150 yrds or so. I'm shooting the AI version in a 15" barrel, and love it. But that's a whole differnt cartridge.

In an encore, you can reload to equal the 308, your cases just won't last as long. 30-40 is a great round and if you have ammo to shoot up, it is even better!

I have a 30-40 Krag Ackly Improved reamer if you would like to give that a try.
