not real hunting.....
« on: November 02, 2004, 02:47:06 AM »
Ok, i just found this spot on GB's forum......
Its hard for me to believe that you guys call this stuff hunting....fences, 'ranches', etc.......
Sounds like 'hunting' for lazy folks.....
I live in NE Ohio...not exactly Montana, Wyoming or SD.....I still got 2 deer last year (a  decent 10 point and a nice doe during archery seacon) and plenty of coyote, squirrel (kids love to hunt'em) and a turkey in the fall , so what gives...?
If it involves a fence  and a fee....it aint huntin'

Welcome to the boards bt.   You must have been reading the thread about BVO with the talk about high fences etc..   I can only speak for hunting in my home state of Texas, where 90+% of the land is privately owned, and if you want to hunt you have 3 options.
#1 Pay a fee (lease) to the owner of the land.
#2. Buy your own land and pay the bank for a few years to hunt the land you will eventually own.
#3.Hunt somewhere on the over 1 million acres of public hunting land, if any falls close enough to your home to justify the drive.  There you pay a small fee to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for the access fee.

Unfortunately, high fencing has become quite common in Texas. Many folks simply love it, others like myself do not.

i simply consider it to be a different activity.  It's not hunting, it's shooting.  I don't care if others enjoy this activity or not, just as long as they understand that their actions can give real hunters a bad reputation.  if shooting a tame elk behind a fence is someone's idea of fun who am i to judge?  i just think he should know he's not been "elk hunting" but rather "elk shooting".

there will be those that jump up and down and pound their fist and say that some game farms are tough... the easy analysis is always to ask what the payment structure and sucess rate of the place is... generally it's "no kill no pay" and "100%"... doesn't sound like hunting to me, sounds like a trip to an outdoor meat store.

This forum is NOT the venue for debating or arguing the merits of hunting for exotics or high fences. This has been so stated many times and is the way of life. This forum is for folks who wish to participate to discuss it. Those opposing it should go elsewhere.

I'll accept such arguments and debates on the Hunting and Shooting General Discussion Forum or the Humor and Off Topics Discussion Forum or perhaps depending on how it is managed on the other hunting forums.

BUT NOT HERE!

Thank you Graybeard, I agree with you 100%.

I have been every where from Alaska to a lot of the lower 48 and hunted free ranging animals. I have even gone on game farm hunts. The 2 game farm hunts I have been on were a lot of work, not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I think we are all intitled to hunt where ever we can and how ever we decide to hunt.  :D

i agree... we should all be entitled to pursue our own personal hobbies however we choose.  what i was talking about was a definitional issue and public perception... certainly i'm not trying to tell you what you can and can't do for fun...

dukkillr, my post followed yours but really wasn't addressed to you. It was rather addressed or meant for the poster who started this thread. It appears the only purpose of his post was to deride folks who wish to hunt animals in fenced areas or exotics and that's been expressed stated since day one of this forum as not to be allowed on this forum. I'm not prohibiting such discussion on the site, just on this one forum.

This forum is here for those who do wish to participate in the hunting or shooting as you prefer of exotics and other animals in high fenced areas. Some of these areas under high fence are far larger than any public hunting area in many states. And in Africa some are larger than some of our smaller states in total land mass.

ok, it's your site... your rules... i'm cool with that... perhaps the discussion can be moved?  or should it just be deleted?  i do think it's an issue that effects all hunters, and should be discussed... it might well be the issue that brings the most bad press to all the other things we do, and that is important to all of us
