Ruger All Weather 25-06
« on: October 25, 2004, 02:07:02 PM »
I have been thinking about getting a good all purpose, varmint/deer, gun for a while now. I have been in love with the quarter bores for a long time too, even though Ive never owned one. What do yall think about the Ruger all weather 25-06? Do any of yall own one of these puppies? What are yalls opinions on it. Im not looking for a super accurate out of the box rifle, just a decent shooter that will get a bout 1.5-2 moa. I can always do some stuff later to it. Well any help from yall will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

David, I have a MKII stainless .243 and I love it. I would have bought a 25-06 but they weren't available 12 years ago. Out of the box before a trigger job it would put three shots in a 1" group with factory ammo. I honestly believe you'll be happy with one. Two things that IMHO need to be done are remove the firing pin and spray it down with carb cleaner and then lube with Remington dry lube (if hunting in cold weather) and tighten the action screws as instructed in the owner's manual for the best accuracy. (sometimes the action screws aren't tight from the factory)

I've got a Ruger 25-06 M77MkII with a wood stock.  Close enough, I hope.

With a Nikon Monarch UCC 3*9, it will shoot 3/4" groups at 100 yds easily.  That was before the trigger job I had done.  It loves Sierra 117 gr BTSP's out to 400+ yds.  It's my whitetail and mulie rifle, and I will stack it up against a 270 or my buddies 7mm. Rem. Magnum any day of the week.

I have only one complaint, and that is it copper fouls really easily, something you have to keep on top of.  JB Bore Paste and Barnes Copper Solvent takes care of it though.

I bought a M77 mkII sporter (stainless/lam.) in 280 a couple of years ago.  I absolutely love that gun.  Its a MOA or better shooter when I do my  part.  I think you'll be plenty happy.
