savage 110 in .308 caliber
« on: January 17, 2004, 12:47:08 PM »
I bought my son a Savage model 110 in .308 win. for christmas. It seems that all .308's from Savage are model 10, not model 110. model 10 is a short action and model 110 a long action, maybe this is a misprint or were all previous guns were all model 110? this gun was used, but couldn't tell it from a new one. serial # f9509xx is one the gun, maybe it is older than i thought? can someone tell me when it was manufactured and clear up the model question.  thanks, deadeye

After Savage went through some hard times they only had one true action length and that was long. They used the long action length and modified it for short cartridges. My son has a M110 in .243 and the bolt and action is for 30-06 length cartridges and the magazine is set up for short action ones. Now they make a true short action.

I own a Savage 110 in .308   Dave thanks for clearing that question up and Deadeye thanks for asking it......I do have another question about the 110...being its a package gun  with a cheap scope and rings..on replacing the scope and rings would i need to buy long action bases for the new scope?

The bases should be the same, but with the long action your rings will be farther apart, which will limit your mounting options.  The 3x9 Millet scopes actually wouldn't fit my Savage 110 with standard bases (it came close though, and thes scopes are on the short side, so most non-compact scopes should be fine).  I had to either get extension rings or an extension base, of which I choose the extension base (just looks better/sturdier to me).  I've used both the Weaver Grand-Slam bases and the Warnes steel bases and both are good (heck both seem almost the same in design), though the Weaver bases are easier to find and usually are a bit cheaper.

For rings I prefer steel rings, and I really like the vertically split models.  The ones on my Savage are Warnes PA rings.  Very nice and sturdy, though you have to remove the rings to remove the scope (not a problem for me as I very, VERY rarely remove the scope from a gun).  On my Swede m96 I've got a set of Burris Zee rings.  Also steel, also good, but I still prefer the vertical split rings.  I have not concrete reason for that, just personal preference. :)

I had to get the long action one piece base (Leupold) and an extension ring for the front (it extends backwards) before I could mount my Simmons Aetec on mine.  Mine is an older 110 but it is a 30-06, but the action lengths were the same length.

I was thinking of getting a Savage in .223.  What are the good points and bad points about the Savage models?  I have a Remington that is accurate but has a stiff action and goofy safety.

Savage comes with the new Accutrigger.  It is an incredible trigger right out of the box.  The barrels are very accurate, especially the varmint models.

The actions are considered sloppy by some, not me, and have heard comments about their stocks being a bit flimsy up front.  I always buy wood stocks so I dont know or care.

Some are turned off by the barrel nut but it hase never bothered me.  The beauty of a rifle, to me, is that it hits exactly where I point it and Savage rifles do that, every time.  They are very reliable as well.

The stiff action on your Rem should be able to be polished up smooth and just live with the safety, unless you just want a new rifle.

Deadeye,

Your model question has been answered, if you want to know how old your gun is call savage they can tell you based on the ser. number. You can also log onto the forums at savageshooters.com, PM a guy called SAS, he will be able to help you as well.
