Help with Rem 700!!
« on: October 05, 2004, 03:43:56 AM »
O.K. guys, I've got a problem.  Last year my wife loaned her .280 mountain rifle to her brother who did not properly clean it.  Now I can see some crud/corrosion in the area of the receiver between the magazine and chamber, where the bolt locks down, where the barrel, action and recoil lug are all screwed together.

I think I should unscrew the barrel from the action to properly clean it and then put it all back together.  Is it likely that I can do this myself and what tools do I need?

If it can be cleaned without taking it apart, how should I go about this.  It seems to me that the crud is in the cracks and crevacies of the area where the bolt rotates.  In fact, I can feel it when camming the bolt.

Thanks for any help.

Taking the barrel off would take more tools---and assuming you have never done it before---skill than you would have. Not really an option---if you go to the trouble to take the barrel off----you might as well replace it with a custom barrel.

Take the action out of the stock and soak it for a bit in some parts cleaner and see if that works.

If I were you I would try blasting it out with Brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner. I have never needed to use these products but I know people that do. Just take the barreled action out of it's stock and hose that area out real good. That brake cleaner is some powerful stuff and it dries almost instantly.  (Just my opinion)

Thanks for the info guys.

marylanddeer,

Do you think there is any chance the brake or carberator cleaner would harm the bore?

Also, I have thought about trying Break-Free CLP.

Hello, all,

Brake cleaner is a degreaser, not a penetrating oil or a rust dissolver.   It's not appropriate in this case.

Do not take the barrel out of the action, sir.

I would use the Break-Free CLP or one of the Liquid Wrench aerosols.   Spray the area liberally while the barrel'd action is locked in a padded vise(wooden blocks would be OK), spray down a rag heavily with the same penetrant and push it into the area that is corroded.    Leave it sit for a couple hours.    Scrub it out with some SCOTCH BRIGHT, HEAVY DUTY SCOUR PADS BY 3-M, like you use on pots/pans/dishes.....so you are not leaving broken pieces of steel wool in the action to eventually rust out themselves and the metal they adhere to.    Those Scoth Bright pads will remove gun bluing, and they'll actually polish stainless steel --So Be Careful where you rub.

Repeat this process a couple times using a proper penetrant and the Scoth Bright pads and you should knock down all the rust.

Clean all metal with the penetrant on a decent rag, rub some kind of heavy duty EP grease containing moly' into the action and the barrel, etc.etc. to stop rusting (to a very good degree....though not salt-water proof!).    Wipe off the excess grease after a couple days if you have the time.....but go hunting with it in any case -- once the chamber and bore have been thoroughly degreased and dried out with Brake Cleaner.

Good luck.

Kroil, allowed to soak into the afflicted areas and the scrubbed with a brass bristle brush or old tooth brush will do the trick. Be SURE NOT to use the toothbrush after treating the gun. The Kroil is NASTY.LOL
