Cool Modern Style Cannon for Sale
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:46:35 AM »
I was just searching on auction arms for some fuse and found this:
http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=6120230

I prefer the traditional look. My barrel is back from being Parrotized and looks great. My naval carriage is basically doone. I just have to loosen up the trunnioon holes since I was keeping them tight to deal with the muzzle heavy.

The barrel does need some light welding to fill in some sloppy welds around the trunnions. Then I'm going to grind, polish and paint. I'll post pistures when done.

Hopefully, I'll be shooting it hte first weekend of November.

The removeable breech could cause issues. I've seen someone else selling cannon like that where the breech is supposedly removeable only for cleaning.

There is one big problem with that. I used to have a C&R FFL and I follwoed the ATF. A major problem is lack of consistency. The fellow might have a letter from one agent saying this is not a destructive device, NFA, etc.. Another might just pull out the handcuffs.

Personally, I prefer the old style cannon. They just look better.

The Removable breech isn't an issue.  The issue is the bore diameter (greater than .50 cal.) and the fact that isn't a replica of a pre 1899 gun.  Makes it possibly definable under the National Firearms Act.  I wouldn't touch the gun with out a letter of determination from ATF.

There is only one place you get a letter of determination and that is from ATF HQ in Washington.  A Field Agent/Inspector might render an opinion, and that opinion might be right. But on something like this without a determination from HQ that ATF Agent is on his own.  Now something obvious like a full auto machine gun...well that's not rocket science.

ATF might detain this gun for a determination, if they had a complaint. But nothing else is going to happen until the determination is made. Unless,  you store right next to your Meth lab or use it to put holes in one of your ex-wives houses.

Don't count on a letter of determination. The ATF HQ can contradict themselves. When I had a C&R FFL there was a continuing controversy about what makes a curio & relic firearm. There is one reg that says anything 50 years or older is automatically a C&R. There's another reg that says that a military forearm not in original configuration is not a C&R. A rational view would be that the first one overrides the other. People who have asked for a determination have gotten conflicting interpretations from ATF HQ. Think of it. Take a WWII Lee Enfield as issued - a C&R. Put it in synthetic stock and its a modern weapon. Put it back into the original stock and its a C&R again. Makes your head ache?

Mainly, I agree with you. I wouldn't ever buy one of those modern ones wth a big bore. I've been divorced once. That was enough lawyers in my life.

OTOH, most ATF agents don't know their own regs. I used to go to gun shows with a friend. We had a deal where the one who spootted more illegal items got a free lunch. Its amazing how much stuff we'd find.

I feel pretty protected. My current barrel looks like a Parrot rifle. My next project is going to be an English minion cannon. All well documented pre 1899. Heck! The minion is pre-1800.
