Anthony,

Weatherby rifles(with the exception of the Vanguard) are manufactured right here in the good old USA.  The Mark V action will withstand up to 200,000 copper units of pressure—nearly three times that of other popular actions.  In my opinion they are the "Rolls Royce" of firearms.  I own a number of there products and will own more in the future.  You can't go wrong buying Weatherby.  Lawdog

Ditto with Lawdog.  I have a Mark V Accumark in 300 Weatherby.  It has worked flawlessly and I couldn't ask for more in a rifle.  I have found the bolt's operation is the smoothest I have found in a rifle.  But my experience is limited on the specific qualities and traits of all the different rifles out there, so others will no doubt fill you in on other brands too.  But in my opinion, if you want a superb quality rifle made in USA, Weatherby is the way to go.  If you haven't yet, you can get a free catalog from Weatherby's website; they have more in depth info on their rifles listed there. :D   Patriot

BTW if you get one, give it about three or so weeks to arrive.

I've got to jump on the Weatherby wagon also. I currently own two Accumarks (.257 Wby and a .30-378 Wby) Great rifles. The .257 Wby is my favorite rifle of all my bolt actions.

I've kicked myself many, many times for selling a Mark V in .300 Wby several years ago. It was a beautiful rifle

I don't believe you will be disappointed.

thank you everyone for the feedback. i was going originally to get a model 70 fthrwght and rebarrel it to 280 then i read how light the weatherby sporter is (under 7 ibs! stocked in walnut yet !) and it has been in my mind ever since. how well do they shoot and how has barrel live been for you weatherby owners out there.? i have to find a store here in ny that carries one and hopefully have it by the start of the season. i am thinking of either the zeiss conquest 3-9 or a leopold 6x42. are weatherbies  still free bored ?

I have a Weatherby Mark V Lightweight Synthetic which I had rechambered to the 280 Remington Ackley Improved.  It shoots about 2 inches while fireforming Remington 140 grain factory loads and I have always been able to find a load under an inch with acceptable velocity with any bullet I have tried.  Kills game too.

The Weatherbys rifles in non-Weatherby cartridges are not freebored.

do you find the ackley improved gives you better real down range performance? How is the feeding with  the ai? did you rechamber right away or did you do it after using it in standard form?  I cannot wait to get this rifle!!

how well do they shoot

Well, my rifle has shot so far at best, two 7/16" three-shot groups at 100yds.  As yet, I am still searching for the load my gun likes best, so the groups most often av around 1" to 1 1/2" consistently.  So, I'm still fishing around for the sub half-moa load around out there.  My two groups were with different loads.  The first, which happened to be my first three-shot group with this rifle, was with Wby Factory ammo (180gr SP).  The other was handloaded, using IMR 7828 and the Barnes 180gr TSX.  I'm trying my best to burn the rest of my H4831 to experiment some more with IMR 7828 again.  (I'm not literally burning it, only 83grs. at a time; depending on how many I shoot in a session.)  Good luck with your decision and future purchase. :D   Patriot

P.S.  And yes, their barrel life as I have seen and heard so far is not any different or worse than other rifles, provided the barrel is well taken care of.  Most often a barrel wears out prematurely due to shooter abuse.  Don't be a barrel burner; give the barrel time to cool between strings.  I usually let my barrel cool to range temp after about 3-5 shots in a row, followed by a good brushing to get rid of the loose residue.  Do that, and I guarantee your barrel will last a long time.

I have had 2 Weatherby rifles, both in 30-06, and they were nice rifles. Both would shoot 1" - 1.5" at 100 yds.   I now have several Sako's,  one of the Sako rifles in 280 and it is by far the best shooting rifle I have ever owned.  It is not a problem to shoot 5 shot groups in 1/2".  Both manufacturers have good reputations for a reason and I dont think you could go wrong with either one.  But the 280 caliber is by far my favorite.  Especially if you reload it is a fantastic caliber.
