Well this one was on my "Aspirations" list for this year. No I don't do New Year's Resolutions. I put down in writing my "aspirations" for the new year.

Today I finally made a decision it was time to do it so I called my dealer and had him order me up one. He said he'd have it in hand on Wednesday but depending on what Ivan does it maybe next week before I get out to pick it up. He first told me when he called back with the price that they only had one Vanguard .257 Mag. available and it was a black metal one. Got a call back later after I told him I'd accept that if it was all he could get to let me know it really is an SS not black one. The wholesaler told him wrong.

So I'm getting the rifle as I wanted it in SS. I plan to toss the plastic stock that comes with it after awhile and put a Boyd's JRS "pepper laminate" stock on it.

I'll mount a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10 Matte scope on it in Burris Signature Zee rings attached to Weaver Matte bases. That's the highest top end of any scope I have mounted on a big game rifle. But this is the one true long range rifle I'm setting up and this is one fine scope. Very bright and clear with wide FOV at low power and plenty of eye relief for the mild recoil of this rifle. Don't expect to use the max magnification much except on the rifle range.

I'll advise you of more products used in this project as I decide all the specifics. This will be the only NON Remington bolt action centerfire rifle at my house. Of course I did also order a Remington 700 CDL in .35 Whelen to offset my transgression against my favored Remingtons. :eek:

Graybeard, i really believe you cant go wrong with a vanguard, i love mine, and you just cannot beat the price for what you get.

i am thinking of adding a few more in different calibers now that i see what mine can do.

I've looking at the Vanguard SS in .257Wby myself. I agree that the stock shoulded be tossed and replaced with a better stock. I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you test it out.

You also mentioned another rifle that has similarly sparks my fance - the CDL in .35 Whelen. I will especially look forward to your thoughts on this one.

As for the Vanguard being your only non-Remington gun in the house, I guess maybe someday we'll convince you to get a Tikka T3.

I've been through 2 hurricanes already - Charley and Frances. As such, I don't care to go through another one for another 10 years, but I similarly hope IVAN doesn't come your way either. I'll keep a prayer for you and your family.

Not the only non Remington gun. Only non Remington BOLT ACTION CENTERFIRE rifle. I have several lever rifles and even single shots none of which are Remingtons.

Don't hold your breath waiting on me to get a Tikka. That is doubtful. They honestly just don't appeal to me.

What is the barrel length on the Vanguard version? I have a Mark V in 257 Wthby and have been real pleased with it. You will be able to put that scope to use on it. I took an antelope with mine a couple of weeks ago and I won't even mention how far it was cause no-one would believe me. Of course I acted real humble about the shot to the lady that was with me and saw it. You know, kind of "Oh, I do that all the time" type of reaction. :wink: I have a Leupold 4.5 X 14 on mine and have used it at full power several times.

The Vanguard's have 24" barrels. Likely gives up 75-100 fps to the 26" but I'm not gonna worry about it. Most of mine have 22" barrels so to me at least it is a long one. My LW243 has a 24" and it gets FULL factory claimed velocity from the Hornady ammo both Custom and Light Mag.

Great choice.... You may want to go to legacysports.com, and pick up a barelled action, in another desired caliber to slide in your stock!!
Howa / Vanguard = terrific accuracy...

I ordered a Weatherby Vanguard today, but in .300 WSM. I like the 2004 stock much better than the looks of last years (Butler Creek) stock. While I was there I noticed my dealer had two of those Rem. 700 CDL's in .35 Whelen, I think he was asking $549.00 for them. Maybe you could answer a question for me. I had heard that the Vanguard is drilled and tapped to accept Rem. 700 rings, any truth to that?

did you mean scope bases? if so yes,i bought a howa 1500 .243 and rem. 700 bases do fit.

Went out lookin yesterday---they had some Vanguards with the factory Weatherby style(Bell & Carlson) camo-ed stocks already installed---as opposed to the crappy composites they had on the other Vangurds. Very nice.

I almost took one---but they were only in varmint calibers-----with 3(almost 4--building another one) AR's in the safe---I really don't need another small bore like that.

The Remington 700--Howa 1500--Vanguard---and the Weatherby MkV(magnum ONLY---not the lightweight) actions ALL use the same bases for scope mounting.

Weatherby using Remington 700 style bases sure does come in handy. Those camo stocks can be had from Weatherby as a add on, or ordered separate. I believe they use them on Fiberguard and Accuguard rifles. Does anyone make a good one piece scope base for the Rem. 700? I looked in a few catalogs, but didn't see a one piece.
