« on: September 13, 2004, 04:08:57 AM »
I want a 22-250 on my .223 frame but I dont know if I want to go through the hasle of sending it back to the company. Have you guys ever done this before? how long does it usualy take. how much would it cost for this barrel. Does H&R even offer the 22-250 yet? I want to get it but just dont know if I should get it. Thanks for all of your help and input guys. Help me decide on this one. Henry

Want a 22-250

I've ordered twice, the first time I waited for 9 weeks for a .25-06 barrel that was out of stock and the last time it took 8 weeks for a .45-70 barrel that was also out of stock. I've read of several that only took 3 weeks or so including shipping time both ways. It just depends on how busy they are and if the barrel you want is in stock when they get to your order. I would plan on 6-8 weeks and if you get it sooner, be happy. The .22-250 isn't on the list, but I believe it's coming this fall per another post here, but so is the .204 ruger and it's not here yet either. I wouldn't recommend sending your frame in until they are available for certain, or you may be in for a looooong wait without a rifle.

Hey thanks man, I wnat to send it in but what if I send it in and they dont have the barrel for a while. Then I sit here at home in the midle of coyote season with a .223 barrel and no frame. What do you think I should do? How much do you think it would cost over all? maybe at the most 150? Or do you think that I should just hold off right now? Thanks for the info.

Course another thing you could do is have your 223 rechambered for 22-250.  I haven't checked the cart OAL but I am pretty sure the 22-250 chamber job should clean up all the old chamber from the 223.  I recently had a 223 shilen barrel rechambered for 22-250 and installed on my FN Mauser bolt rifle.  My gunsmith also took about 1/4 inch off the chamber end to clean up the throat, etc as this was a used barrel with about 400 rounds thru it.  Can't do that with the Handi barrel.  Course, thats a shilen barrel not a micro groove Handi barrel.  I also have a 223 Handi Ultra that seems to not like bullets any heavier than 55 grains.  Both these barrels have the 1/12 twist.  At this point I suspect it has something to do with the shallow grooves in the NEF barrel.  As the 1/12 twist should handle 224 bullets up to about 64 grains.  If you are after higher velocity and/or heavier bullets than the 223 will shoot, this may not be the way to go.  Bout the only thing the 22-250 has over the 223 is maybe another 100 yards or so.  Its not any more accurate in my opinion.
