What makes a shotgun loud?
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:35:57 PM »
Im sorry if this sounds stupid but Id like to find out. What exactly makes a shotgun loud? My friend has a 4 10 and its pretty loud. We took the BB's out and replaced it with rock salt. We shot it and it made allmost no sound at all. We also did it with a ball bearing that fit perfect and again no sound. Why is this? Thanks

It's trying to sneek up on foolish experimenters. Sorry I had to do that! Actually you lightened the payloads and reduced the pressure to the point that they were probably sub-sonic and therefore lacked the crack(sonic boom) when fired. The report you hear is greatly affected by the pressure behind it, and the speed.
