7mm-08
« on: September 11, 2004, 05:49:29 AM »
I have been looking at getting a new Handi in a deer caliber.
How is the 7mm-08?
I never checked out the caliber until recently and it looks promising. It looks to be a fairly flat shooter out to th 250yd mark and have planty of energy as well.
I havent decided yet and would like  some feedback from those that have experience with the round.
Thanks

Steve

i have no experience with the round personally but i' am in love with it . i have shot it once (in a bolt action not a handi) it shoots very well and very accurate , its parent case is the 308win which has a lot of inhairet accuracy which also goes to its children 243win 260rem 7mm-08 and many others. so accuracy wise it will be more then enough. ballistic wise the 284 bullets typically have very high ballistic coefficient which makes the bullet buck the wind very good so at typical deer ranges you shouldn't have to worry about the wind . power wise : go with it and don't look back should make them dead as DRT (dead right there) from what i've heard it is the norm to get bang flops on deer with the 7mm-08. recoil: well on the one i shot there was none to speak of but i was a heavy remington bolt gun but from what i hear it is very light on the shoulder most people say that it is a good starter gun to youth.

well like i said this is mostly all second hand knowledge but i hope it helps.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

mitchell is right in every respect stevex, the 7mm-08 is a winner for a deer gun as well as a great all around caliber....<><....

I have one is savage model 11. I just got it a few weeks ago. It is very accurate. I load IMR 4895 42.6 grains and a 140 grain Sierra game king boat tail spitzer. It shoots very well and I look forward to trying it on White tail very soon. As far as recoil I dent see much difference between it and the 243 I own. I do not think you can go wrong with one.

stevex;

I've been shooting a 7mm-08 since 1989, I think its the best all around deer round east of the Mississippi. I own two rifles in that caliber, a Remington Model 7FS and a Ruger Compact. All the deer I've shot with them seem to go down quickly, and I use 120 grainers. With that longer barrel in the Handi and using 140gr. bullets I believe you will have a winner for those big bucks in Michigan.
Hope to hear from you soon on your decision.
Good Luck.

Well after comparing the ballistics of alot of the deer hunting calibers I believe the 7mm-08 will probably be my next purchase.I located a Handi rifle a couple weeks ago but have not been able to get back to the sporting goods store that has it.Should be able to in the next couple days.
I do not reload so if anyone can tell me what off the shelf loads these Handi rifles like would be appreciated.

Thaks

hi stevex -

a month or so ago i ran a poll here for what caliber i should get next. a week earlier, i bought a really nice receiver from BBF and need to get a barrel for it.

over a weeks time, two calibers topped the list, 7mm-08 and 25-06. in the final analysis, i ended up ordering a 223 barel with iron sights. that makes no sense until you take into account i have about 47 hajillion rounds of 223 ammo.

i will probably order a 7mm-08 soon enough, it is a nice fit between 30 and 243 calibers. although the 25-06 is still calling my name !
