Scope mount for Savage 110LH 30-06
« on: September 04, 2004, 07:13:04 PM »
I have a Savage 110 LH 30-06 (long action) that had a mediocre 4X scope on it.  I wanted to upgrade so I bought a Simmons Aetec 2.8X10X44.  Love the scope so far but when I went to mount it on the Savage I noticed a problem.  The Weaver style 2 piece bases that were on it were too far apart to fit the Simmons.

Second the rings were too low to clear the barrel.

So I went to the local gun shop, bought the Luepold 1 piece base and dovetail rings ($50 for the pair).  Very nice setup, but, it has only one possible position for the scope and not near enough adjustment to move it where I need it.  It seems about 1" farther forward than the old 4X scope was.  The Aetec has 5" eye relief in 2.8 power but it loses that as power goes up.  I have to REALLY move my head forward alot to get the proper eye distance.  I'd like a base/mount setup that lets me move the scope back far enough to just snap my head up on the stock and line up at the proper distance.

Is there anything out there that will allow this for me without having to shorten the stock to get it done.  I haven't tried removing the recoil pad to see if this improves the eye relief thing but that will be the next step before shortening the stock.

Does weaver (or anyone else) make a one piece for the Savage that allows adjustment?

Any other ideas?

Handirifle,

I had the same problem when I got my 110LA. Bases that came with the rifle were too far forward for me (I am vertically challenged with short arms to boot I guess). I got some "extender" bases that allowed me to move the scope back about 1/2" so I don't have to lean forward to get the full field of view. The bases fit the same holes in the receiver but the Weaver style grooves are moved back towards the butt plate to help with the eye relief problem. I have not checked but Leupold or some aftermarket supplier should make bases for the rings you have. If not the Rifleman rings and Weaver style bases are available. Check with your local gunshop, most well stocked emporiums carry them and Midway would undoubtedly carry these.

Some other things to consider. Check your recoil pad/butt plate since this adds extra length and moves the scope forward. Another posssibility is having a smith cut down the stock, this would work if the LOP is too long and would bring the scope back as well as improving fit. Also do a search on old posts here since I recollect seeing a thread some time back with an identical theme on need for increased eye relieft.

Safe shooting.

Thanks.  I posted this on the NEF forum since I'm there a lot too and they said Luepold makes some "offset" rings for the base I have.  I'll look into the weaver style setup too.  I have that setup on my 223 Ultra Varmint but wasn't sure it was available for the Savage.

I can cut my stock, if necessary.  I did it for my sons rem 700's.  That was a last option but even when the scope is offset if it is still too far I'll do it.  It's an old gun and I'm not afraid of making it fit me.

Weaver makes extended bases (both in regular/aluminum and Grand Slam/steel versions) and Warnes makes Maxima extended steel bases as well.  I ran into the exact same problem when mounting my Millet Buck Gold on my Savage 110 .30-06.  I opted for extension bases rather than rings.  The bases just seemed like a sturdier way to do it.

Extension bases at MidwayUSA (Weaver Aluminum Version):

Rear Standard Base

Extension bases at MidwayUSA (Weaver Grand Slam Steel Version):

Front (Extended Base)

Rear Standard Base

There's also the option of a 1 piece base, which will offer more cross-slots for even more mounting options (it's aluminum only though):

Matte Aluminum Version (out of stock at the moment.  They do have glose version as well though the 110 has a matte finish so it wouldn't match).

Good luck.

PS.  You could try Brownells for the mounts too.  That's where I got my Warnes mounts.  Midway is cheaper though and their search function is easier to use, which is why I posted links from there.
