Still want to buy a Deer caliber barrel
« on: August 29, 2004, 12:57:38 PM »
Ole Tac is still looking for a deer caliber barrel. I wanted a .308 or 7-08, but I will settle for a .243 if available. Anything for sale out there?

IN  A HANDI RIFLE, DONT  FOOL WITH ANYTHING ELSE UNLESS YOU RELOAD FOR IT ALREADY.   IF YOU GO THE 308 OR 7-08 YOU GAIN NOTHING OVER A 270 OR 30-06...THEIR ONLY ADVANTAGE IS A SHORTER CASE WHICH MAKES FOR A GREAT MOUNTAIN WEIGHT BOLT ACTION RIFLE....BUT IN A SINGLE SHOT.....DOESNT MATTER.
243 IS A GREAT CALIBER....BUT IF I HAD ONE SHOT ID TAKE A 270 OR 30/06......30-30 IN A SINGLE SHOT......MIGHT AS WELL TRY A MUZZLELOADER-BALLISTIC EQUALS......45-70 IS A GREAT NOSTALGIA ROUND BUT ITS TRULY ONLY GOOD TO ABOUT 150...IT HAS THE TRAJECTORY OF A HEAVED BRICK, ESP WITH THE WEAK SISTER FACTORY LOADS .   TAKE A HANDI IN 30/'06...LOAD IN SOME OF FEDERALS PREMIUM NOSLER PARTITION CARTRIDGES IN 180GR  AND YOU HAVE  1800 FT/LBS OF ke AT 400 YARDS ..........NO 45-70 CAN DO THAT....EVEN WITH THE HOT SHOT, NOT MEANT FOR TRAP DOORS, AMMUNITION.
JUST MY .02, BROWN TROUT.

Hmmmm. I"ve killed over 50 deer in my life.  22 of them with the NEF 45/70, 18 with a 6mm Ruger #1, 3 with a 8 x 57(hot loaded), and a few more each with 30-30's and 30-40 Krags.  An' a couple of other's where I'd rather not mention the caliber.  Longest shot was 125 yds.  Don't forget,uh, some of us Live and Hunt in THE WOODSSSSSS.  Any of the calibers mentioned in such a disparaging way will kill deer at reasonable ranges, but granted if your going WAY OUT THERE, then the '06 or any of it's fatter or skinnier bretheren are the way to go.

It all depends on where you hunt and where you're likely to hunt.  I have a left-handed Ruger 77 in 30-06 topped with a Leupold 3-9 and it's a safe queen.  I have thought about trading it a few times but I keep on keeping it "just in case" I end up hunting over a field, or get a chance at an Elk or one of those bigger northern I hear they have up there.  I really should trade it cause I'm not a good enough shot to take a deer at 250 unless I've got a portable bench set up anyway.   I hunt in fairly open woods so a long shot is 75yds.  Last year I took my one deer with a 45 Colt levergun at about 35.  I'm pondering picking up a 308 but I really don't need it.  I have a 357 Max and a 45-70 in the Handis as well as the "Queen".  One thing to remember is that the Handi is a light rifle... buy more cartridge than you really need and you will feel the difference everytime you squeeze the trigger.

Like Joel I have killed a lot of deer with a lot of different calibers and guages.  You pick the caliber and I can truthfully say that if I have taken a deer with it that deer has something in common with the others. They are just as dead as the others.

These last guys to post are all correct. In Maine where I do most of my hunting now I have never shot a deer over 40 yards, but that's a function of where I decide to hunt. It is legal by the way to hunt deer in Maine with a .22 Mag but I don't and don't know anyone who does. Many are overgunned but that is thier choice. I do know of and have spoken to some old timers who in confidence recall shooting 100 or more deer a year in the "old days" both for food and profit, by the light of the moon with .22 LR's....<><.... :oh: no!
