I haven't followed your posts on your Ultra, but if you have not done so, either do yourself or have a trigger job done on it. I have four NEFs and that alone has cut the groups by half or nearly so with every rifle. You may not want to get really light with a hunting rifle, but seeing as the only time the action is in a cocked condition is just before you shoot it, being in the 3 pound range is not a bad thing, just keep your finger off the trigger untill you are ready to shoot. And if you don't shoot, just hold the hammer back, press the trigger and as you let up on the hammer release the trigger and you will be quite safe. Use a FIRED cartridge in the chamber to protect the firing pin in case the hammer were to slip before you release trigger and practice this drill untill you and your son can do it on demand even with gloves on. Good hunting to you both this year, JP

thanks, jph.
i've considered doing the job myself thanks to perklo's plan.  probably not time to send it to h&r and get it back in time for much shooting before the season begins.
the trigger on the ultra really isn't bad. i don't have a scale, but i'd guess 5-6 lbs, very clean.
i think this stubby little rifle is capable of always shooting 1.5 inch or better with its favorite factory ammo. that'll do on out to as far as i or my son will ever shoot at a whitetail on a greenfield, but i'd like to tighten groups for close quarters/keyhole shots in the woods.
it'll do for now. will review perklo's plans today to consider jumping in.
His,

Perklo has very good instrucitons, and you are right, a consistent 1.5" is minute of deer at any reasonable range.
