J C Higgins Model 50 rifles

Does anyone else have one? I have just acquired one and would like to put a Timney trigger on it right off the bat but don't know what model number to buy. Anyone have any experience with these rifles...they are suppose to be pretty good guns... :grin:

Hello again!   Does your JCH need a Timney??? Mine was worked on ages ago by a smith when my dad had it, it is much better than my Timneys on other guns.  You would be looking for a Timney for an FN Mauser, go on line to Brownells website and you'll find one, but wonder if a good smith can do you right and save you the trouble maybe?

Welcome to the JCH club.  Funny, people tend to sniff at these because they say "Sears" on the side, but these are some of the finest rifles ever produced. FN actions, High Standard barrels, I put mine in a McMillan stock..stuck a leupold on it 20 years back and it shoots MOA groups all day with Hornaday Light Magnum .30-06 150 gr Interlock.

Again, congrats on a fine rifle!

Thanks for the posts! Yup...Ordered a timney also...I just hope the thing will shoot and is not just one that won't shoot anymore that someone just unloaded on P.T.Barnums poster guy!! :oops: It looked pretty dern nice in the pic's...no visable abuse.....I'm getting anxious to get it...should be here by the end of the week. As far as the sears logo...I got another Sears rifle in a scoped 30-30 that my dad had..I think its a much better built and has nicer wood than the Marlins of that period...and it was built by Marlin!!  It's a shooter also...taken alot of deer. I'll have to try the light magnums...Funny thing is...I have reloading dies for the 30-06 and have had them since 1965..bought them from an estate sale...cheap!. This is the first 30-06 I've ever owned!! LOL I bought the dies thinking I'd get one sooner or later but ended up with 30-30's ,308's, 30 carbines,25-06 and 307 Winchesters but no 30-06... I read an article in Guns and Ammo on these rifles and I saw one of these model 50's for sale so I said now is the time to use those dies!! :)

I had the Higgins 51L. It was a lightweight '06 on a Husquvarna action and barrelled by High Standard. Six and a half pounds but it would drive tacks (and loosen fillings) They don't bring much money because Higgins isn't quite as classy a name as Winchester, but they were good honest guns. Wish I hadn't sold that little gun.

What bases do you have on that model 50?  I have two of the rifles and have managed to get weavers on them but would rather have redfield type bases.  Just email me if you can. Thanks,  Bob
