.480 and .490 Roundballs?
« on: August 18, 2004, 09:22:56 AM »
I have a box of Hornady .490 round balls that I am going to shoot out of my T/C Renegade with .015 Ox-yoke patches. I pick up another box of round balls and did not see the size was .480. Do I need to get thicker patches or will the .015 Ox-yoke patches work?  And yes I will be shooting black powder with them.  :D

Thanks

I'm shooting a .490 ball and a 0.010 oxyoke patch with good results out of my Renegade.  When you add .020 (double the patch thickness) to .490 you get .510 for the "projectile" diameter.

Do the same with the 0.015 patch and your .480 ball and you get the same .510 diameter.

Give it a try!

I think Hornady made them to go with their plastic sabot. I have seen them for sale with the plastic cup/sabot, and they call the .480 a hard ball. It is not pure lead, and is designed to penetrate better, so they say.

I seen the ones you are talking about, but they are .485. They are listed separate from the .480. I don't think they are the same thing. :?

Hornady Muzzleloading Bullets 50 Caliber (485 Diameter) Hard Ball with Plastic Patch Box of 20.

I would just sent them back but it is not worth the aggravation.  :D
I will just use my .490 for deer and the .480 for plinken.

Redhawk, if they sent them to you in error, you don't have to pay return shipping...just notify them they screwed up the order and to send you a prepaid return shipping label, a UPS pick up 'call tag', etc...done that several time over the years.

Odds are they won't even bother paying the return shipping, they'll probably just tell you to keep them, and they'll also send you the correct box of .490's

roundball, it was my mistake. I ordered the wrong number.
Now if the .480 roundball is .480 and I put a .015 patch around it. wouldn't it be .510? I see the ball as .480 and if the patch is .015, it would be .015 on both sides of the roundball and make the diameter .510. Is my thinking off?

Because people using .490 roundballs use .010 patches and the diameter would equal .510.

Redhawk...using a thicker patch, may or may not work....You'll have to shoot it to see...its just not as simple as both adding up to .510....
I went through this same problem in the '80s...when I built my .54...
I had .530 and .520 caliber balls...I tried .010....015....020 and two .010
patches with the .520 balls....nothing worked...or I should say none of these combinations grouped as well as a .530 ball and .015 patch....but I did learn quite a bit...two .010 patches load tighter than one .020...and with higher powder charges, they don't burnout as quick as a .020...also wasp/hornet nests between powder and ball/patch does do a good job of protecting the patch...Once I found the right combination with .530 balls...I ordered a mould from Rapine....and converted the .520s to .530s...flintlock

I think your right, I will just have to try them out. Gives me a reason to shoot more.  :D  Nothing wrong with that.
