6.5x55 Swede and 7x57 Mauser or .260 Rem. and 7-08 Win.?
« on: March 28, 2006, 08:35:20 AM »
I'm trying to figure out which cartridges will be around the longest. The old timers have history on their side and have been used for some very big game using heavy bullets. The newcomers come in short actions and have good ballistics with lighter bullets (little problem loading them with heavy bullets due to short case necks) I'll bet on the old timers. If I could have only one rifle and it had to be one of this four, they seem more versatile, and there are so many of them out there worldwide that loaded cartridges or handloading components should remain available. I'd take the 7x57 but I also like the Swede.

I have the Swede and 7-08 but reload & shoot the 6.5 the most.  It has very little recoil & my 12 yr. old daughter shoots it.   It will be her antelope gun this year.  Since I reload, I don't worry about the availability of ammo.  If you don't reload, the 7mm-08 might be a better choice.  I only discovered the 6.5x55 a couple of years ago but I now have 4 rifles in this caliber and want more.

My nod goes to the 6.5x55, i have a "bubba'ed" M94 as a truck rifle, and a custom build with a 23.5" barrel that is "sweet".  Both of mine are based on milsurp receivers, recoil is low, accuracy is great, basically very comfortable rifles to shoot.  The 7x57 may have greater choice in bullet selection, they too are accurate, but I still prefer the 6.5.

Their all good rounds.
The only one that looks like its slipping away is the 260.
Thought about  a 260 for the wife but I'm not a reloader and the Swede ammo is available every where I need it.
It would be nice if one of the big 3 ammo makers made a premium load like a 140 Nosler Partion for heavier game.

The 6.5 Swede is the best bet of the four you mentioned.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I believe that Federal makes just what you want. A while back, a friend gave me a box of exactly what you want!

Now, my first choice would be the 6.5x55 and then the 7x57............Or maybe it would be the 7x57 and then the 6.5x55. Well presently I don't have a 7x57 so maybe it would be the 6.5x55.

As many guy's that have the 6.5x55 here, either for themselves or their wives, I'm suprized the 6.5 is not more popular. To bad about the 260. I think it was probally the best new round to come along in about 30 yrs, maybe more!

The only load Federal lists for the 6.5 is a 140 gr. Power Shok, or another term for Speer Hot Cor.

That may be, but I've got a box at home. Maybe they discontinued them? Like I said, I don't buy factory ammo.

Bummer. I would have like to stocked up on that load. Too bad they didn't keep it in production.

I looked at hte 260 ballistics on the remington.com sight since a friend of mine was trying to decide on the 260 or the 308 or the 300 saum in  DPMS rifle. The ballistics impressed me and I have long been a fan and owner of several 6.5x55 rifles. The 260 is high performing for a non magnum.

I have had a 6.5 swede sporterized by kimber of clackamas, OR., since I was married 11 yrs ago not my first big game rifle but one of my favorites. I did so much tinkering with it, trigger job, reloading etc., that my wife went around saying 6.5x 55 swedeish brasshh., the one buck I shot with it with was a bang flop. I load two rounds currently one is imr 4064 about 40 grs. and a hornady 129 gr. spire point sub-moa, and a 125 nosler partion with about 1 more grain of 4064. I recently took a second look at the gun, the ramline stock is UUUgly to the bone. cut it way back steel bedded the lug and reciever, bedded the end of the stock and sanded the whole thing down includeing the cheesy checkering, did a us woodland camo job with fusion paint also cut the barrel down to 17 inches and put a target crown on it, refinshed the whole barrel and action with cerama- coat. took it to the range the other day topped off with a leupy 3x9 still shoots 3/4 inch 3 shoot at 100 yds. Its my new camo stalker. I can hear the wife now camo stalker, camo stalker

Go to Gun broker and check ammunition.  Hornady made a 129gr light magnum for awhile and a guy on there has some for sale.  I bought 5 boxes.  The add is for a box but when I mailed him he said he had more.
I haven't shot them but a friend has and really like them for deer.  The bullet is a SST 129gr.  The SST always was tougher than the early  balistic tips.  Hope this helps.  Bye the way I have shot some 140gr Nosler partitions with RL-22, handloads, and they put the smack down.   Buckfever

Of the four cartridges you named, I have two; the 7x57 and 6.5x55. Both are excellent whitetail deer choices. I handload Nosler Partitions in both and they are pure poison on deer. Both cartridges have great histories, and should be around for a long time to come.

The 260 and 7-08 are great short action rounds. I hope the 260 gains the following it deserves. The 7-08 is quite popular in this part of the country.

All four cartridges have much to offer the practical hunter/rifleman.

I'm a huge fan of the 7x57, but few guns are manafactured for it today. I suppose that it's becaused it is loaded 'light' for the older Mausers. The obvious one that will be here the longest, from this point forward, is the 7-08. Remington, alone, offers it in ten different models. I believe, in that department, it is only surpassed by the 243, 270, 308, and 30-06. capt david
