Quote from: Ron T.
The loud "CRACK" that a high-powered rifle makes is due to the bullet breaking the SOUND BARRIER... and you can't muffle that with a "silencer" because the bullet continued to break the sound barrier well beyond the rifle's muzzle.

That is true but sonic crack is a non-directional sound and unless it bounces off of something (like a building or tree line) it is pretty quiet and almost impossible to determine where it came from.  A firearm loaded subsonic with a can ("silencer") will have a report much like an airrifle.  Even without the can a subsonic load (like the whisper line) is pretty quiet (similar to a 22 lr).  A supersonic load run through a can will reduce the report by about 60-70% making a high powered centerfire sound like a 22 rimfire.

I have been thinking about this same thing for a while now and as Greybeard said look into the 300 Whisper. I already have a T/C Contender carbine so would only need a barrel and reloading dies and components and I would load up some 200gr sub-sonic loads and never look back. I would not even waste my time trying to use a silencer system even if it was legal here.

one thing i would like to point out.  one person suggested bringing the muzzle inside a little before firing.  BAD IDEA  with a high power centerfire.  unless you want new windows.  i know a guy that shattered his windshield by standing in the bed of his truck and using the cab for a rest.  the blast out of his barrel shattered his windshield.   funny thing is, i told him it wasnt a good idea.  some folks have to learn the hard way.
