Can't sight in a new 7400?
« on: October 04, 2004, 06:31:40 AM »
OK, here’s the problem: My brother bought a 7400 in 30-06 caliber from Wal-Mart. We fired the gun from a rest and we were barely on paper at 50 yards (shot was high). The rear sight was already quite low, so low in fact that when you snapped the gun to your shoulder the natural line-of-sight through the back sight caused you to be looking at the base of the front ramp. After adjusting the rear sight as far down as it would go, we were still 7” high at 50 yards. Any thoughts and/or suggestions?

I was at a gun store the other day looking at 7400s and I picked one up and shouldered it, but could not make the sights line up right (seemed tilted and low). I was thoroughly confused. Turns out, this one had a stock with a very low comb on it. I picked up another with the high comb, and it fit just fine. Sights lined up naturally. Anyway, it might partially be the stock shape. I never even checked my iron sights though. I went straight to the scope. That's my suggestion. Get some Burris Signature Rings with the offset insert kit, a good scope, and a bore sighter. You'll be set up perfect in no time.

I know a scope will fix it, but it seems like the rifle should be usable with the factory-installed sights, no? His stock is a high-comb composite, but your description of having to tilt your head, etc. to make the sights line up is an accurate description of what we experienced as well.

Is it possible that the wrong front sight post was installed at the factory? A taller front sight would make it shoot lower.

I compared the front sight to the one that came with my 7600 and the one that is on my Dad's 740 Woddsmaster: all the same...

I have the same sight problem with my 7400 30-06 synthetic stocked carbine and to get around it I installed a Burris 1X EER scope. This didn't solve the original iron sight problem though. I am going to order a higher front sight from Williams sights but have not had the time to do this yet.

Remington sent my brother a shipping label and told him to send it back. We’ll see what happens…

My brother got his 7400 back from Remington yesterday. Not a bad turn-around; the paperwork showed they received it on the 19th and they shipped it back out on the 20th.

This is what the repair order had to say (basically):

Customer hunts with open sights. Complaint: Accuracy. Problem found: Accuracy.

Repairs: Replace front ramp with Model 700 front ramp. Replace synthetic stock with synthetic Model 1100 (20 gauge) stock.

The fact that they turned it around so fast makes me think they’ve had this problem before. We are going to the range this weekend so we’ll see if it’s really fixed.

Well, we went to the range and all is well. Looks like the changes they made worked. Now for the real test in just a few short weeks; c'mon rifle season!

Glad to hear it had a happy ending.  Good luck with it this fall.
