Recommendation for 870 slug brl with cantelever scope mount?
« on: August 09, 2004, 01:10:48 PM »
My 870 (an express supermag) came with a bird barrel and rifled slug barrel, but the slug barrel has iron sights and I would like to put a scope on it this year. What recommendations do you have as to barrel and slugs for whitetail this fall?

Thanks.

Depends on you hunting conditions.  Where I hunt my longest shot is about 50-75 yards.  I had a fully rifled barrel with a Leupold scope on my Wingmaster and sold it.  I replaced it with an open sighted smooth bore slug barrel and put fire sights on it.   My main reason was that I could not afford to shoot the slug barrel at the range like I wanted to with slugs costing $10 plus per box.  My second reason was that for the distances I was shooting I prefer open sights.  My third reason was that during turkey season I put a turkey choke in the gun and have a very accurate compact turkey gun.  I think all depends on your shot distance and how well you shoot with open sights.  It also plain depends on your personal preferences.  If you go for the scope I would go for a Leopold mainly for the long eye relief.  My barrel was also a Remington brand and it shot fine.  Hastings would be my second choice.  The Hastings is a mighty good barrel but I prefer the finish on the Remingtons.

Good luck with your decision.

Unfortunately there are plenty of shots that exceed a slug gun's range and my ability to shoot with the iron sights on the top of the remington barrel.

I too am in the process of setting up a shotgun with a rifled barrel.  I just bought a Bushnell Elite 3200 in Firefly and got bit with a heavier load trying it for the first time.  Right now my thinking is at least 4" eye relief, short length-nothing longer than 11" to clear the rear sight and leave space for a flip up cap and a heavy recticle.  A Leupold or Burris seem to be the best options from what I have found so far.

I have a Hatings cant mount w/ a cheap simmons 4x32 fixed scope on it. W/ federal premium 2 3/4" slugs I shoot 2-3" groups at 100 yds. Shot 2 does w/this combo last year. Both were heart lung shots and they dropped in their tracks. This combo works great but if I were starting over again I'd do it different. I'd get H&R Ultra in 20 ga. Check out the HR shotgun forum if you want more insight on this.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun
