Factory Rifle Stock Fit
« on: August 05, 2004, 06:31:16 AM »
I have a real problem in this regard. I do not have a long neck and do not appear to have high cheek bones, but the comb of most factory stocks are too low for me. -----I use to shoot and hunt a lot but I stopped for several years and am just now getting back into it.. I just got home from Wal Mart and I noticed what looked like a Winchester super shadow in 270 WSM with a 3x9x40 Simmons scope on it  for $395. When I got it in my hands I noticed that it did not have the rubber gripping area that I read that the super shadow has. Anyway when I brought the rifle to my shoulder with my cheek bone on top of the comb I was looking below the scope at the mounts. This stock would be too low for me if a 32 mm scope was mounted in super low rings. When I have to raise my cheek up off the stock my accuracy off hand goes to hell.-------The only factory stocks that work for me is the Kimber 84M and the Howa 1500 with the thumbhole stock.   Anyone else have this problem to this extent.

After shooting silhouette, and becoming accustomed to keeping my head straight up and down while I shoot, I understand what you mean.  However, if you look there are sticky pads that mount to the stock that will raise the cheekpiece. They come in leather and rubber,  but they will allow you to more comfortably shoot any gun, with out having to have custom work done on it.

I have the same "problem" and I do have high cheek bones and a long neck.  I just adapted my shooting style so the stock is lower relative to my cheekbone. With some practice it has become natural. I have a similar situation with my .22, which I sometimes like to shoot with iron sights, so I remove the scope. I have one head position when using the scope and another when using the iron sights.  It was just a matter of getting used to it, and it didn't take long.

My attitudes toward this are different when it comes to shotguns, but then rifles ain't shotguns, so I don't mind adapting to the rifle.

Stock placement in the cup of the shoulder has a direct bearing on where your cheek meets the stock.  It will also have an affect on preceived recoil.  You might try using only the bottom 1/3 of the butt.  Factory guns are made for the "average" man.  If you are other than that a custom stock is the only way to have the perfect fit.  There are some "relatively" inexpensive barreled actions that are excellent which may make this a feasable option.

The super shadow you mentioned is a great gun, and you outta look into buying an add-on cheekpad.  The Super Shadows are in the same design as the more expensive Ultimate Shadows, but do not have the rubber overmoldings or drop-plate magazine as the Ultimates do, which is why theyre so much less expensive.  Still, its a great gun, and the add-on pads will work great..
