Found a good deal on a 270 Wby
« on: July 22, 2004, 06:18:35 PM »
I am picking up a Accumark in 270 Wby, with a 4-12 Swaroski on it.  I need to work up a load for it, and would prefer one bullet for Mule Deer and Elk both.  Any favorites out there?  Will a 150 gr Hornady Spire Point do the trick?  How about one of the 140 gr bullets available, or the barnes triple shock?  ALso, anybody have any reloading data using RL25?

Thanks, Tom
Regards,

Tom

The 270 Wby is a fast round, so it's a very good idea to use premium bullets, especially if you're going to use it for elk.

I would use 150 grain premium bullets, and bullets that come to mind are: Nosler Partitions, the Barnes X (or TSX), and Trophy Bonded, and other similar quality bullets that hold together.  You could look into the Accubond and Interbond, but I don't think they are available in 150 grain weights.  Nothing will out penetrate a Barnes, so that would be your bet for elk, and it's still a great choice for deer, although perhaps a bit overkill.

The Hornady Interock Spire point is a great bullet, and I'm sure it could be used for elk, but I would recommend a more premium bullet such as the ones I mentioned.

tominboise,

My favorite load for my .270 Weatherby is 73.2 gr. IMR-7828 for 3,311 fps. using Nosler 150 gr. Partitions.  Start around 10% under and work up(just a good policy when getting loads from others on the net).  Lawdog

Zachary, I am in a little different situation.  I shoot a 30-06 instead of a .270, but am thinking of shooting the Light Magnum Round made by Hornady.  The shoots will be between 0-400 yards, mainly around 150, but some could be long.  I want the extra FPS, but I don't want to bullet to "blow up".  The Hornady Light Magnum Interbond bullet, has the fastest fps of any factory bullet.  I wanted to make sure it wouldnt blow up at 75 yards if I hit bone???

Tom:

I've looked thru my limited collection of reloading manuals...Swift,Sierra,Nosler,Speer,Hodgdons,and even Lymans...I can't find any reference to reloading with Reloader#25 powder...I see Reloader #22 and all the bullets weights...for the velocities you'll get out of it I have been told to use a premium bullet...Swifts A-frame...Nosler Partition,CT Failsafes,Speer Grand Slams...would be my choice for a dual purpose bullet...all of these have had great success in taking large game...I'm sure the new Barnes Triple Shocks will do good too from the looks of their design...

Mac

Take a look here

http://stevespages.com/277_2.html

I have never saw so much data in one place.  I reduce by the full 10% and shoot it over a coronagraph.  Some of this data is hot. So start low and work up.

as Zachary said "The Hornady Interock Spire point is a great bullet, and I'm sure it could be used for elk", but at lower bullet velocities. At the velocity of that magnum, you really need some top bullet, like Barnes, A-frame, or Partition something....
The higher the velocity, the higher the risk of bullets exploding on impact, or fragmenting right after penetration of the skin.

I can't say for sure but I think maybe it produced some good results in the test  rifle.
