Colorado?
« on: April 05, 2004, 04:05:13 PM »
My son is interested in finding / panning for gold and is stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado. Does anyone know if there is any gold in that area?
If there is, any info on where to start?

Thanks much!

Most of the placer deposits are soutwest of Boulder heading down towards Fairplay.  The southwest corner of the state has quite a few claims also around Durango.

Internet research is the best way to look. Just search for "gold prospecting Colorado"  and you will probably get a lot of hits. If he is really intereste the GPAA has 6-7 claims in the area and for about $80 he can become a member and use their claims all he wants.

I found good color in the Rutt Nat Forest.west of Yampa in the flat top wilderness. No gas engines allowed in the wilderness. But good panning and sluicing.(Watch out for the big cats, there sneaky)
The Arkansas River north of the Royal Gorge is very good for corse Gold.

Down close to Ft.Carson you might try  thee Canon City area or Silverton. But watch you don't jump any claims.

Visited an old gold mine a couple years ago (now tourist trap), but the guide was a retired lifetime gold miner. He said 75% of Colorado gold is still in the hills. Good luck prospecting!
