Well, do or don't - they sure aren't cheap, and take a while to get done.

  Any of you guy's get hunting rifles done?  

I've got a banged up stock on a 300WSM abolt that I'm contemplating replacing.  The McMillan is said to be the best - what are your experiences?

McMillans are great synthetics.  I prefer laminates for the feel of the wood but McMillans are ridged and tough and well made.  They usually work well.  I have a good freind that loves the synthetics and McMillans are some of his favorites.  I still prefer the wood..

Gunnut,

    What type of laminates are out there.  I like them also, but only found boyds out there so far.  

    Any recommendations?

I like the stock that Remington has just started using on the new 673.

  I'm still going back and forth between getting new wood or ponying up the dough and going with a McMillan marble'd hunter stock.

Try ElkRdige at Reamer Rentals.com.  they make a bunch of differing coler patterns and styles.  Also Fred Wenig at Lincoln, Missouri.  They can build almost anything you desire.  I spoke with then about a laminated stock for a mannlicher on a swedish mauser action, and the customer wanted a thumbhole design included.  Fred's excellant staff assured me they could do the job and had several color and pattern options available.  Both of these have web sites, I'll include the links below.

Spot Shooter - I've got two McMillian stocks on my hunting rigs and they're worth every cent! I'm not crazy about the looks of some of the laminates out there but there are a few that do look good - like the Remington laminates. Good luck.. CEJ

I am having a 7 mag built & just went thru an in depth comparison of synthetic stocks.  I compared Brown Recision, HS Precision, Rimrock, Bell & Carlson & McMillian.  I liked the Brown, but decided that they are not worth the extra money over a McMillian.  McMillian is the proven leader in aftermarket stocks.  I am getting the sporter model.  As someone else on this forum stated " most match shooters use McMillians"

Well fella's,

     I pulled the trigger so to speak!  After checking out the post's on stocks here, and over at Shortmag's I decided the Mc was the way to go.  Not only for weight improvement over a laminated stock, but I don't have to worry about it being done right, or it's strength.  

So I sent my metal work to McMillan today and asked for a Browning Hunter stock Marbled in 60% Black, 20% Tan, and 20% Olive.  I'm having them do the pillar and bed job also.  

  It will be just over 3 months before I see it again - I'm wondering if this is going to improve the 2 1/2" groups I've just started getting at 300yds!  She's almost a one hole wonder at 100yds with a .35" pretty much consistantly.  Either way I should have a beautiful and strong stock when it's all said and done.   BTW - We had a bad accident with the old stock before someone asks'.

Someone asked me what my Mcmillan Stock (it just made it here on July 9th) looked like....

I LOVE IT!  it's 60% black, 20% tan, 20% olive.
Feels great, solid as a rock, and maybe slightly lighter than the wood I had on it.

Balance is GREAT!!!!  nearly hard to beleive!  It's got a nice palm swell, and feels like a new gun.  I had them install pillars and bed the action also.
It took about 16 weeks (they had a Volume order to contend with)

Here are some pict's....  and they really don't do it justice (looks and feels much better in person)

I haven't got her out again yet...

  I'm loading up some break-in and test loads for a new Tikka 243 I got so I'll see how she run's then... Should be in the next couple of weeks.
