Hi from a new guy.
« on: June 17, 2004, 04:43:17 PM »
Hi. My name's Kevin, and I am way up here in Saskatchewan Canada. We have a nice silhouette range here. Large and small bore. We even have half sizestargets hiding somewhere in the clubhouse.

I just tried silhouette for the first time last summer. The guys were great and let me (a total stranger) try out a few different firearms. I loved it. My old progressive lenses made open sights a little tough, but I was hooked. This year I plan on getting started with my new revolver (well, new to me anyways). I am developing loads and trying to get some free time to practice, practice, practice.

I am happy I was introduced to this forum. Looking around Greybeards, I found a lot of great info. One distressing thing though. By just looking through the first page of threads in "Handgun Silhouette" I was disapponted to see so many posts regarding a possible new association being created. After talking with my local shooting buddies, I never got the impression that the IHMSA was so bad. Coming here, I almost get the impression I have entered a sport that has serious issues.

IHMSA is not so bad...there are a small few who will tell you different. Go to the IHMSA.org website and click on the IHMSA New Message Board (you'll have to do it twice) and see for yourself all the positive aspects of the game.

Welcome to silhouette!

The only problem IHMSA has is that some of the officers and the board can't play together nicely all the time. Often their egos get in the way of the good of the membership. If you stay out of the politics you will have plenty of fun.
We do have one disgruntled member who had one of the rules he had written changed by the membership. He is the one making all the noise about a new organization. He is mad at everyone and wants to start a new organization that is doomed to failure.  He has no money to start up a new organization, no ranges that shoot his game, and he plans to run it with an iron fist. Shooters will have no input on his rules.
Your best bet is to stick with IHMSA and NRA silhouette run events. They will be around long after we all have forgotten "Kelly from Alaska".

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you enjoy your stay! We have quite a few very knowlegable folks here who give good advice if you need it. And lots of eager ears (or is it eyes?) to hear stories, so feel free to share!

Welcome to Handgun Silhouette.
The real fun of the sport is what you experinced at your club and match. That is the spirit of IHMSA and NRA handgun silhouette programs.
As with any group of people, there are going to be differences of opinion and perception. This does lead to debate and occassionally mild conflict.
Most of us feel the sport has declined for a couple reasons, mainly lack of publicity and a shift in interest of gun buyers toward other types of guns (semi-autos and cowboy).  If you aren't interested in getting active in the organization or trying to influence it, just keep focused on your shooting and your friends and you will have a terrific time! I would also like to welcome you to silhouette.  Like Jim said, there will always be differences of opinion.  Some just have a sharper tongue and some are just whiners.  All in all it is a great sport and I hope you have loads of fun shooting steel.

Hey GZ,
I noticed on your profile it says gender unknown.  Is it a California thing, or are you going to go for the High Lady trophies next?   ;>)  Good to see you again, and I'm hoping to get a couple of folks from Oregon down to the Extravaganza this year.  See you then.

schick - My best advise to you is to disregard many of the posts on this forum.  Lately it seems to be far too negative and I have made an effort to stay away from the threads that I know are basically just a glorified pi$$ing match on both sides.  I am a shooter and I love to shoot metallic silhouettes as we all do here (assumption made).  Have fun and enjoy the friendships that will no doubt develop as a result of the commadarie that you will experience at silhouette matches.  It seems that organizations often get in the way of that anyway with politics.

Welcome to the world of silhouette!  There's nothing like the sound of bullets hitting metal and the smell of burning powder!!

Once you get to know the players and the sport a little better, there is no secret shame in reading and enjoying the pissing contests! Who can out-stupid the next guy? Eventually you become informed enough to form your own opinion about a subject being debated. You might even pitch in! Some people don't like debate or argument. Sounds like permanent bachelorhood to me!

Larry -- Congrats on your great shooting up in Oregon! I was happy to take a couple trophies home, but you are a downright pig about it! I have to get a picture next time of you trying to manuver out of the stat house with about 10 plaques! Wow! Looking forward to more of your wit and banter in person at the Extravaganza! Jim

HI Schick

If you focus on the fun and on the shooting you will enjoy the sport.  Stay out of the politics unless you have a very thick hide  :D
