How far inland do you live? Have you done any hurricane preps like water, etc.?

I'm a good 300 miles or more north of where Ivan is at this moment. But the path is to bring him either right over us or just west of us. So either way we'll feel the full force of him tomorrow. They are now saying full hurricane winds (74mph or greater) will be in our area for two or more hours tomrrow. They are predicting wide spread power outages as the winds topple trees onto power lines.

We've put up almost 20 gallons of drinking water and have an adequate supply of water for comodes. We'll fill the bathtubs some time tomorrow before the worse hits. We have plenty of food and drinks laid in. Got tons of candles and adequate kerosene lanterns. Cooking maybe on the grill or side burner of it or Coleman stove tho. Got charcoal and a smoker too. Just have to hope it isn't off long enough to lose the meats and other stuff in freezers.

From what I can gather our worse concern is to be the winds and then the loss of power and phone service that follows. If the towers are still up I'll have my cell phone at least. We'll get a good bit of rain but where I am that's really not likely to cause me any real problems. My swamp will no doubt again become a lake and likely so will the blueberry orchard but both have seen that before. Shouldn't be a problem.

We'll let ya know how much the wind does to us after it's all over and our power is back on.

GB,

Living here in Florida, one piece of equipment that we have found extremely valuable is a generator. I've gone through several of these storms and nothing bothers me more than the loss of a water supply. I have a well and the generator would help in that area.

Hurricane Ivan.....coming to a town near you!

I know this may be insulting to some who have lost much in these storms, but I must say that the damage has been remarkably light for strong storms like this.  A 120+ mph hurricane has traditionally been horrifically destructive of life and property here in the U.S.  We've done well to get off so easy.  It could have been a lot worse, and from experience it seems it should have been a lot worse.
