.357 Max carbine barrel.

What kind of velocity increase can i expect going to an 18 inch barrel over a 10 incher.  I think the 18 inch would make a nice 125 yard and under thumper for the cedar swamps of Maine.  Also thinking about the .375 JDJ in a short barrel, any advice is welcome.

I have a brand new VVCG .357 max barrel but between crappy windy weather and a bad batch of brass I haven't gotten any thing thru my
Chrony yet. I expect to get 1900-2000 fps with 180 gr SSP and possibly more.

I've gotten 2080 with the 180 Hornady SSP bullet and 2160 with my LBT 180 grain WFNGCs with LBT blue using WW680.

I like it!

Using H110 I get 1850 fps from my 14 inch barrel and 2045 from my 24 inch barrel. As each barrel is different your milage may vary.

To veer of topic a second... can you shoot 38 special/regular 357 mag out of 357 max barrel?

Thanks on that Chris. I seem to see more used 357 max barrels for sale than regular 357, and as I have about 3000 rounds of 38/357 laying around... :-)

The last time I asked TC about this they advised against shooting large quantities of the shorter cases (38 and 357 Mag) out of a 357 Max.  The chamber can develop a "ring" just in front of the shorter case.  This ring is from the gases cutting into the chamber.  According to TC, when the longer Max case is then fired, the Max case tends to fail at this ring.
I've go a 357 Max and I've only shot a few 357 Mag out of it for this reason.  You may want to contact TC yourself before firing your 3000 rounds.

As much trouble as I have had getting decent .357 max brass its a good thing I can use mag/special brass in my gun. Bought 200 pcs. of max brass and on first loading the cases split long ways end to end. Packaged it all back up and sent it back to Remington Munitions in AR and they replaced it all and sent a check for wasted components involved. Quite righteous of them I thought.....but it has kept me from using my max at its potential.

I suggest you contact TC directly and see what they say.  I'm just passsing along the information I received.  I took them at their word and stopped shooting the shorter cases in my 357 Max.

I shot 357 Mags through my 357 Max barrel twice and quit.  When I cleaned the barrel after shooting the Mags there was always a lot of shaved pieces of the copper jacket in the barrels.  It seemed like that some of the jacket was shaving when it hit the rifling.  Do not know if it hurt anything, just did not look right to me so I quit.  It has been about 12 years ago now and I did not have a scope on the barrel so I really do not know what the accuracy was like.

#8 Specials do not produce pressures high enogh to "ring" the chambers of the 357 Max but the 357 Mags at high pressures do - I ruined my first 10 inch barrel shooting "hot" 357 mag loads through it. It was not due to leading or fouling as the chamber had a ring cut into it that caused my maximum cases to fail.
On the good side, it leaves you with more 357 magnum cases.
