209x50 Katahdin Barrels!!!

I handled one at the gunshop this past Friday.  MAN what a short, tight handling little gun.  As typical with the Katahdin bbls it has the Muzzel break  :( .  But what a nifty little set-up.

I ALSO LOOKED AT THE KATAHDIN 209X50.  I WONDERED IF THE SHORTER BARREL WOULD STILL ALLOW YOU TO TAKE A 150-200 YARD SHOT ACCURATELY.  I REALLY LIKED THE LOOKS OF  THIS SHORTY.

What would the velocity difference be on that short barrel verses the standard 26 inch?

I wouldnt expect stellar performance drops.  Considering BP is pretty energetic to begin with, and the pressure spike is early on, the rest of the burn seems, at least IMHO, icing on the cake.  The only negatives I could think of with the shorter bbl is a decrease in sight radius.  But most people drop on scopes anyways.

P.S. There was a similar type of question posted on the "Traditional Muzzel loading" section for any who really care.

Katahdin Barrel ??
« Reply #6 on: June 14, 2004, 12:36:10 PM »
:D  :D Hey Guys,,  I like the Katahdin barrel also...but not the muzzle brake and sights..  I plan on putting a 1.75/6 Leupold short version, on top of it..  Here in Pa. deer hunting, shots are usually under 75 yards... I have a stainless frame along with a stainless barrel... My question to all of you is.... If i cut down that barrel, first 6 inches from muzzle, would i be affecting the accuracy???  I know shorting the barrel will have some effect on it, but somewhere i heard that you should not cut down the muzzle end of a muzzleloader barrel.. I have no choise, cause the other end is welded to accept the frame.. Anyone else heard this ??  Getting rid of the QLA should help the accuracy also... Thanks ......Bruce...

Greetings from new member and 209x50SS/Cin Laminate owner.

I'm pretty sure you can have the barrel cut by a gunsmith and re-crownd. Also, you will be losing the QLA if thats important to you. Magnaport will cut, crown and install new QLA if you want.
