Got a NH Moose permit...
« on: June 26, 2004, 09:44:05 AM »
I just got back from a week of camping in Maine when I was very delighted to find out I successfully drew for a New Hampshire Moose permit for any sex in area B. That is in far northern NH where the success rate is 91 %.

Needless to say I am quite happy. Now. I plan to use my TC Contender with the Super 16 barrel in 45-70. I would like to ask what would be a good load for such a huge member of the deer family. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I saw your post on handgunhunter too. I use a 350gr hard cast SWC or Hornady 350 FP over a very stiff charge of 3031 and another with 4198. both are equal in accuracy and the velocity from my 15" TC is 1660fps. Cases still drop right out. Same loads in my buddies 1886 Winchester chrono's at about teh same. I know I can go hotter, but this is way fast than factory, and more than enough. Hod tight, it's a thumper and I love them big bores!! Good luck.  Topgun.

Thats it, throw sand in my eyes LOL. I have been applying since 1988 and havent been picked once, I have a friend who has been picked 3TIMES!! They have revamped the system so if you apply and dont get picked you get a point for each year which means they put your name in for each point the way I read it, I sure wish they did that in 88. Good luck on your hunt, you got a nice area to hunt. My son has a TT route in northern N.H. and Maine and sees Moose daily, there is one spot he sees them almost every day but they are usually cows. I live in Deering N.H. and have a Beutiful old bull out back I see all the time, lots of gray in the quarters BIG rack and long beard. Last fall he was sparring with 3 younger bulls 150yds from my house, I watched them for 40 minutes from my archery stand not 40yds away. Once again good luck, gotta go wash the sand out of my eyes.

TopGun has it right, a stiff load with 350gr. to 405gr. cast bullets.  Or I like the Barnes X - Bullet either the 300 gr. or 350 gr. If you decide to go with the Barnes let me know I have several loads for them.

Hello and welcome, Yankee Reloader, from another.....um..... well yankee reloader  :-D .  You are very correct about the permit system.  It has been revamped.  Every year you do not get picked you get another point for next year.  So that means next year you and I will have double the odds of getting picked.
