Cast blues in the 41 FG
« on: May 31, 2004, 03:08:24 PM »
Has anyone tried any heavy cast in the .41 mag.
The heaviest I've tried so far are the Federal 250gr cast core, and they did ok. My handloads have only been with the 214 gr .410 SWC, and it has been frustrating to say the least.
Before you say I need .411 slugs; the cast-cores are .410 and they shot around 2.55" at 100 yards.
The 214gr swc cannot manage 3" at 50 yards, so far.
I'm thinking that heavy and slow might be the way to go.

You might want to try one of the clones of the LBT style slugs.  These give a shorter nose and a longer bearing surface.  Might be what your barrel is asking for.  If you enjoy hunting up old moulds, look around for Lyman 410426, a 260 gr. round nose designed for the 401 Winchester Self Loader.  I've been using that slug in my 41 handguns for 20 some years with good success, and yes, I size it .411".
You may want to impact swage the throat of your chamber too.  Measure what the throat diameter is and size you slugs to it, irregardless of what the barrel groove is.  If the throat doesn't get filled well you get gas cutting on the base before the slug obturates in the bore.  Marlins are famous for this problem with micro-groove rifling.  If you cast to the throat you can generally get any of the big bore Marlin micros to shoot full power heavy slugs as well the jacketed stuff.

The best bullets I found for my 41 Marlin are the Lee 170gn and 215gn Tumble Lube Bullets. I shoot the 170's at about 950 fps, and the 215's at about 1400 fps. These bullets have shot rings around all the other cast bullets I tried in this rifle
