Can ya give a Newby some sight settings??
« on: May 17, 2004, 01:44:31 PM »
After watching the Match Yesterday I am Hooked!!
So went out today and bought a Ruger 22/45 5 1/2" barrel to get started in smallbore. Went to the range and got my setting for the Chickens and pigs this afternoon with 4 brands of ammo. They are all 19-21 clicks off the bottomed out sight.
Can you give me a ballpark figure for Turkey and Rams??
I know it will differ, but W/o a spotter I would like to be close.
Thanks!!

HI Jim

That doesn't sound like the stock Ruger sight to me so would need to know what you have on the gun.

Why no spotter?  Ask somebody at the range to help you out and most likely they will spot for you.  We try not to let anyone shoot spotterless unless they want to shoot that way.

It is the sight that came on the gun , (Just like it came out of the box) I got it at K`s Merchandise this afternoon. As far as no spotter, if it were a Match day I am sure I could find a spotter. However times I can get to the range to practice are irregular and am often there by myself.
Like this afternoon and often on Saturday mornings.

Jim, I have a 22/45 "Great Eight" (8" barrel) and using high velocity ammo go up 3 clicks for the turkeys and 7 more (10 total) for the rams.  This is for yards, if the range is in meters add 1 more click for the rams.

Hope this helps
Paul

Jim

PDM1's advice should get you in the ballpark, though with the shorter barrel each "click" on your gun will get you more elevation that with the longer 8" barrel.  If you are practicing use cardboard with generous margins and you can spot your shots with spoting scope.  Make a set of templates and use black spray paint to spray thru the templates.  Swingers are good but paper is too especially when you have no spotter.

Thanks Paul That should Help!! I`ll try it tommorrow night.
AKIHMSA Yes they have target boards at each range, and I have found some templates so will  go to paper instead of swingers for practice.
Unless you paint often you never know where you hit the swinger.
It has been over 20 yrs since I shot handgun(I`m a rifleman) and am very rusty!! I need to get a several thousand rounds under my belt quickly.
May as well save wear & tear on the swingers.
Thanks for the help!!

Tip for a rifleman transitioning to pistol.  In Pistol sight alignment and trigger control are 90% of what matters.  Keeping the sights aligned without the stock to keep you eye in the same place as as with a rifle is why shooting a pistol is tougher.  With rifle if you keep you face in place on the stock the sight stay aligned without any effort on the shooters part so you can concentrate on putting the front sight on the target.  Not so with pistol.  Freestyle helps a bunch in this but Standing is has movement going on all over the place.

Have fun, that is the main thing!  Welcome to silly wet.
