« on: April 26, 2004, 04:48:08 PM »
In Feb. I was in South Texas hog hunting.  In March I finally got the last cactus out of my leg  ! What type of pants/ chaps do you wear in brush country to protect yourself? Iknow,I know, "watch where yer goin!" Any other ideas? Thanks
Mike

Brush pants or chaps. The hard plastic snake leggings help too. Look in some of the catalogs for the brush pants. Useful for quail hunting and pheasant hunting too (in Texas anyway).

We use snake leggings or a double layer of canvas made into a legging.  There is a Mexican word for these but it escapes me at the moment.  They are made like a bell bottom trouser but stop at the knee and are held up by a pair of loops over buttons sewn to the pants (or Velcro) so they can be removed.  Easy to make if you know a seamstress.  Spray with Thompson's Water seal and they will keep your legs dry in the dew.  Also wear good leather boots like Redwings or something similar since many of the lightweight synthetics won't turn a cactus thorn.  I also always try to watch where I'm stepping -  you seldom have to bulldoze thru the middle of a prickly pear patch unless you are retrieving game.
