If the hunter payed attention to his or her own limitations, I don't see why the .41 won't work just fine.  I would go with heavy for caliber bullets, like maybe a 250 grain hard-cast LBT style bullet.  It wouldn't hurt to use a single shot pistol, so that no velocity is lost to a cylinder gap, but a revolver with a fairly long barrel should give enough velocity to drive a heavy bullet through an elk's chest.  A well-placed broadside shot might not require that much bullet mass and velocity, but I believe in erring on the side of caution.  If you're packing enough gun for elk, you're packing more than enough gun for black bears.

First off I have never killed an elk period. I have killed 3 large animals with the .41RemMag, 600+, 1500+, and 2100+ pounds. All one shot. Two shots were low center shoulder the other was frontal head, actually right up the nose and out the back of the skull. Longest shot was 64 yards shortest was about 8. The load was a CBPT 250g GC over 17.5/2400 out of a Reeder Custom Guns SBH. The animals I killed were a Bison and two feral cattle. I would not think twice about taking on elk with a properly loaded .41RemMag out to 50 yards, maybe 75 if you and your gun is up to that.
Love those .41s'

I got a lot out of Paco Kelly's article dealing with heavy-bulleted .41 mag' loads.     It's entertaining in some respects, as well as informative.    www.sixgunner.com/backissues/paco/heavy41.htm    should get you right to the article.

Enjoy it on elk and on bear, if you can stand the excitement.
