I am thinking of building a Marlin 336 in 7x30 for my son to hunt deer with. Has anyone tried this round? Any suggestions would be welcome. I intend to go with a 24" barrel, there are only 2 bullets I know of, a N 120 and a 139. Is there a gunsmith any of you would recomend? Shot

sgunner,

Have you thought about a Contender or Encore in 7-30?  If you load your own this has lots of advantages.  More bullet and powder selections, other barrels as he gets older and the time you spend at the bench with him.  That is what some people call “quality time”.

If you do not load your own the basic logic applies.  As he gets older, more barrels.  How can you go wrong?

I have thought about a T/C. I have a contender carbine with a 22K hornet barrel and a 357 max barrel. The kid shot his first deer with the max, but now wants a repeater. I have an Encore with 209x50, 20 ga slug and 45-70 barrels. I am kind of into this barrel thing, I have several Savage 219s also. This boy is left handed, an avid hunter, shooter and trapper and he likes lever actions. We are talking about a .307 project also. I shoot a Savage 99 with quick detach rings and a back up tang sight. He likes the idea but can't use the right hand safety on the 99 and can't mount a tang sight on a newer 99 with the tang safety. Maybe I want to do this because it is something I can't just buy anymore. The only problem I can see is the lack of a variety of bullets with a flat point.

The 7-30 is a nice round and one of my favorites in a TC handgun barrel. See nothing wrong with it for a lever gun. You might also think about the 7 JDJ #2 on the stronger .307 Win. case. It will give you another 150-200 fps.

For either I'd go with SSK Industries. www.sskindustries.com

The've done a lot of lever action jobs of this nature.

I just e-mailed SSK about the 7x30. I will report on how it goes. Thanks for the info, Shot

:D I just saw a Winchester rifle at a gun show and thought what a nice handy rifle. I use the 7x30 in my contender and am very impressed with it. There are still of few of these lever guns out there for sale.
