Author Topic: Are the majoy American manufacturers dumping the .308? (Read 1189 times)

I had a good buddy tell me that the 308 is getting dumped by some of the major USA manufacturers as the other like calibers are so popular ie.. the 7m-08. I will have to do a little research tonite, but have you heard/read anything to support this?

I would have a very hard time believing that ANY manufacturer, both domestic and/or foreign, would dump the .308 from their line-up.

Granted, the 7mm-08 is a great cartridge. In fact, it's my FAVORITE whitetail cartridge. However, I don't think that it comes close to the .308's popularity. One glance over factory ammo will show you that .308s have nearly 3 times more selection than 7mm-08s.

If any manufacturer dumped the .308 from their line-up........well...then that would be just plain stupid.

With the availability of military ammo and the popularity of the .308 there will be lots of other cartridges fall to the way side before the .308 goes down. Lawdog

This is what I am thinking . . . it would be like giving the 30-06 the boot. I wonder if the manufacturers are just cutting out carrying so many calibers in all the different models?

A few calibers that will never go away-----well, unless they start having civilian ray gun sales or something like that.

The 308 will be one of the last cartridges to go away. It's the standard NATO cartridge, as such, all military cartridges seem to maintain popularity for ever. It has gone through more testing than you can believe. For its size, it excells in power, accuracy, barrel life, throat errosion, and it feeds well. The other military cartridges such as the 223 Rem and 30-'06 Spr will stay too. Even the 99 year old 45 ACP is still one of the most popular military based pistol rounds.

That's what I like about a feller. I'm somewhat of a SMART A$$ myself.

Jacksonville, you say? We're neighbors. You shoot over to Gateway? We ought to get together there some time and burn some powder together. I'm available most days.

I've a confession to make; I've never owned a .308, and probably never will. Not that it's a bad cartridge, which it certainly isn't, a great cartridge, actually. But I'm a fan of the longer .30, as in '06.

Take a GOOD look at the 2004 Remington, Winchester, and Browning Bolt action rifles Boys..... :wink:

I don't SQUAT for .308 offerings in any of their rifles :lol:

Snowfall in Hawaii? :roll: .......308 offerings are WAY down in most popular lines. I am thinking of a new Guide gun in .308. I think it would be a dandy short-medium range woods gun. :grin:

When the .308 came on the scene, oh so many years ago, it just about ran the 30-06 off of America's gun ranges. I can't imagine a gun with such a reputation for accuracy getting left in the dust. Hell, the .257 Roberts is still around!!

The only way the gun manufacturers can get you to buy some of the newer calibers is to hype the advantages over the calibers you may already own. I am positive that they wouldnt say a word about the .308 in favor of the 7mm-08 if they didnt want to sell the 7mm-08. Or the Short Mags in favor of the .35 Rem, etc.

It's all basically a marketing ploy to sell a new product and caliber. They don't make any money if you buy used guns in calibers you already know.

If you own a .22, a 12 Gauge Shotgun, either a .22 Hornet, .222 or .223 and either a .308 or .30-06, you really wouldn't need to read the hype and fall into the Hype trap.

Conservatively speaking, and without trying to create a debate about caliber preferences...... Even though I have alot more than the above listed choices and calibers in my cabinet.
