New, "star" driver's license.
« on: June 13, 2025, 02:31:15 AM »
I took notice of the new "star" driver's licenses now being issued.. At first I eschewed getting one, but after second consideration, I went ahead and made the move.

Word is one cannot fly, travel outside the US or even enter many federal buildings without it !

No there is no information that cannot be found on the web concerning most of us, and I would use it very little for those purposes..  I rather tend to think it is a
Trumpian move, since we must prove citizenship to get the card...usually by birth certificate.

      An example... https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/news/2024/05/06/are-you-ready-for-the-change-to-real-id

The star is 'not necessarily' new in the State of Florida.  I have had a Gold one on my Florida Driver's license since it was issued on 09-13-2019.

There are two star colors - Black and Gold:
Quote
The black and gold stars on a driver’s license indicate its compliance with the Real ID Act.[/q]
  • A Real ID-compliant license is accepted as a valid form of identification at airport security checkpoints and secure federal buildings.
  • The Real ID Act sets minimum standards for the issuance of identification documents to combat identity fraud and enhance security.
  • Obtaining a Real ID requires providing specific documentation to prove identity, Social Security number, residency, and lawful status.
  • The Real ID Act, enacted by Congress in 2005, serves the purpose of establishing minimum standards for the issuance of identification documents such as driver’s licenses. Its main objective is to combat identity fraud and enhance the security of state-issued IDs. Enforced by the Department of Homeland Security, this act aims to create a more secure verification standard for citizens. However, the enforcement of this Act has faced multiple delays, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the deadline for full enforcement of the Real ID Act is set for May 7, 2025.

To achieve this, the Real ID Act requires states to implement specific criteria when issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards. These criteria include verifying the applicant’s full name, date of birth, address, Social Security number, and lawful status. In addition, the act mandates the capturing and storing of digital images of the applicant’s supporting documents, as well as sharing information between states.

The Real ID Act has had a significant impact on identification procedures across the United States. Its implementation has led to the issuance of Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, which are marked with a black or gold star symbol. These compliant IDs are widely accepted as valid forms of identification at airport security checkpoints and secure federal buildings.
The act’s purpose of combating identity fraud has also prompted states to enhance their processes for verifying applicant information and document authenticity. By doing so, they contribute to a more secure and reliable identification system that benefits both individuals and government entities.
Overall, the Real ID Act plays a vital role in safeguarding the identification process and reducing the risk of identity fraud. By implementing higher standards for identification documents, it provides individuals with more reliable forms of identification while strengthening national security.
Starting on May 7, 2025, every air traveler over the age of 18 will be required to present a Real ID-compliant identification or another TSA-acceptable form of identification at security checkpoints for domestic flights.

I will use mine to travel to Canada.  We used to go back and forth with no demand for verification, but back about during the Chinese plague (Covid), they started demanding what was called an "enhanced" license. Since I don't plan on flying soon and could give up my Canadian travel, I gave it a pass.

Before that, my wife being one who did crochet and knitted plenty of things..had a favorite yarn shop up in Fort Erie. While she shopped yarns, I shopped at a used book shop around the corner...(a la, "The Olde Curosity Shop"), where I found many  an old, dusty but interesting book.

With her gone, I decided to pass on the trips..but now may return to sort through the book shelves.   Besides I do not request dollar value difference, and they like that..

The Canadian dollar is currently worth 74 cents USD.

BTW: If trhe 4 western provinces were to join the USA, their banked Canadian dollars would be converted on par...a further benefit for joining the union..
