Help selecting new rifle
« on: December 05, 2003, 12:13:04 PM »
I am looking for a new rifle, I have already decided on a .300 win mag, I just need to choose a brand. I was leaning towards a Tikka, I know alot of people like them and although, I don't own one the few I have shot have been very smooth and great shooters. I was also condsidering a sendero, which I have in a 7mm STW and really like the extra weight and 26" barrel. Also considering a Browing, possibly with the BOSS.   I was wondering if the barrell length is really that important in maximizing the fps and if additional 2 lbs(on the sendero) would really noticablly reduce recoil or would it be similiar to the Browning with th BOSS. Any help is much appreciated..thank you

jackd,
the sendero is too heavy if you are going to pack it around. I would look at a winchester or a remington. They are a little more on the traditional side but sound rifles. I saw a great deal the other day. I saw a bretta mato for $630, and they would have taken less. It was in a 300 win. That is an excellent rifle at well below the "book" cost. So keep your eyes peeled there are a few still around!!

My tendency for any 300 win would be to go w/ a rifle that weighed around 8.5 pounds.  The recoil on this caliber has to be in the mid 20's to low 30 pound range.  To me that is not a light rifle caliber.  I do not know what a Tikka weighs, although they are excellent rifles. But that would be my only concern.

After lugging Muzzleloader around the mountains, I don't mind a heavy rifle.  In a 300 Mag I would appreciate the exrta weight.  Savage has the model 12 FVSS with a heavy fluted barrel - weighs 8.75 recoil reducing lbs.

Interestingly enough, I have one .300 Win Mag in a Remington Sendero SF, and another in Winchester Classic Stainless with BOSS - so I can give you a REAL opinion.

Both of my .300s are very accurate.  In fact, with PMC 180 grain Barnes X bullets, the Winchester with the BOSS shoots a bit tighter groups than the Sendero.  Then again, this could also be because one gun likes a particular bullet and load better - regardless of the BOSS system.

As for recoil, the lighter Winchester with the BOSS kicks about the same, if not a little less, than the heavier Sendero without the brake.

so if he bought a lighter rifle(say a a-bolt syn.) in .300 mag that it would kick to hard for the average person? What about with a good recoil pad??

Perceived recoil is not just how hard it hits you in the shoulder.  It is noise level and the total movement of the rifle.  This would include muzzle jump  and your perception of the scope/rifle coming back at you.  Sure a good recoil pad will help but it is not a 1 step recoil solver.

Gentlemen new member here, first post.I bought this spring my first 300 winmag.I bought a Tikka T3 Hunter. The hunter has the walnut stock. The rifle weighs 613/16 lbs and with the Burris fullfield2 3x9x40 and shells the rifle weighs 7lbs 9oz.
The tikka is shooting winchester 150gr PP right now @ 3290 fps MV&3600lbs ME.The recoil is definately greater in the 300 than in my 270win.I can't help but think in a heavier rifle it would be considerably less.At this point I am shooting papertargets off a rest at 100yds only.My dies arrived today and I am going to be working up a 180 hornady load as black bears open in three weeks here in BC.

Ruttinbuck,

Nice to have you on board!  No doubt your Tikka does have a bit of recoil.  But it will be nice to carry up and down all those hills and forest roads.  Also since you reload, you could load it a little lighter, maybe down to the 3000fps range.

In a lighter rifle, 300WM, put a good pad on the back end, and a good Brake on the front end.  Not all brakes are the same.  Some will rip your ears off.  I use Vais brakes because thery aren't as loud as the others but still give me the recoild reduction that I want.
The Vais Muzzle Brake will take away 45% of the recoil.  I have a 7.5# 280AI that my 10 year old shoots off of the bench.  He will heat up the barrel and reach for more ammo.  Little snot loves to shoot this rifle.
Horses and mules take me away from the mess of mankind and into the beautiful country.
