I've owned one model 742 in .30-06 and a .308 7400 rifle. I presently have a .30-06 7400 carbine. The 742 and the rifle were not particularly fussy about reloads. The .30-06 carbine is very particular. Some people claim there is need for special resizing dies termed "small base". I would have argued this before, but the new carbine is very finicky. It is accurate however, and with factory ammo (which functions flawlessly, as does first time loaded brass) is capable of just around 1 MOA. However, the 742 and the .308 were not as accurate, and I would have to report that from what I read in this and other forums, the 7400 on average is not a tack driver. With a .243 one usually is interested in some varmint hunting, an I feel that if varmint hunting is of interest, another rifle type may be more desirable.
