getting old
« on: April 27, 2022, 10:24:13 PM »
just traded off my turbo polaris rzr on a new polaris general. Still a bit fast but has a dump box. Good thing is i sold the rzr for a give away price to my son in law so when i have the need for speed i can just borrow it. But honestly the general will do 70 and i can probably count the times ive been north of that in the rzr on my 10 fingers. I think its the first time ive ever went to a dealership to buy a toy and didnt come out with the fastest thing they sold. My son in law shook his head and told me im officially old.

My "four-wheeler" is a formerly retired, unjacked, 4-person, Golf Cart, #33, with 19 HP engine, that'll do 15 mph on a good day.  I am "fine" with that top speed.  The hogs turn the parallel and flat earth into an axle bending, teeth rattling, pothole marked battleground as they dig up EVERYTHING looking for worms and grubs.

That polaris sounds nice. Looked at side by sides a while back. Those things are cool but pricey.

The farm four wheeler is a little S10 ZR2.

Had  a '67 Stingray in 1980 and loved its get up and go.  Mama was driving a Honda CRV and got the hankering for something bigger and picked a GMC Yukon.  You know you are getting old when an SUV can scare the shXX out of you.  That 6.2 will flat out fly.

its got a roll cage and a dot approved windshield just like my jeep does. A piece of barbed wire would snap like a shoe string. I read in the newspaper all the time about people getting hit crossing the road or dieing of heart problems because they stayed in the house and led sedate lives. Ive drove fast cars and toys all my life and the only bad wrecks ive been in were in trucks and it was when i was young and was drinking. What this unit is is a utility side by side like a ranger or mule but with some snort. It is just as good at putting around the farm at 5mph hauling hey as it is hauling ass. Its even got a dump box, heater and even heated seats.

that brings up a good point. I remember back when people like some here bashed the 70s muscle cars saying WHO needs that kind of power. Today your mini van or pickup is as fast as most of those cars. Id bet most here wouldnt go buy a new pickup with a 4 cyl in it because they dont drive over 55. Heck this things a hell of alot safer then my honda rancher that goes 60. I just thank GOD id dont lead the boring life some others here have or give up on life when i turned 60. Im still a kid in a old mans body and like it that way.

I've never really considered my life boring. I've always liked a canoe more than a bass boat, a Harley better than a croch rocket, and a mule better than a razor.

im some where in the middle. Only street bike id buy is a harley period. Ive owned one since my 2os. As to a side by side. Yup my rzr was VERY fast and not so practical. But this general is plenty fast and has a dump  box and will do what a mule will do on the farm and play on the weekends. Just because it will go 75 doesnt mean you have to drive it 75. Most of us drive pickups that go over a 100 but how many drive them that fast. Id say with a 100hp this general would out work a mule or kubota. But take that mule on the trails with some friends and your going to see how undergunned you are. One of my best friends hand a 700 rhino back when myself and another friend bought our first rzr's They were only 800s but he tired fast off eating our dust. Id bet with the suspension on this general it would eat bumps and be more controllable at 50 then a mule would be at 25. Heck its even got soft door enclosures and a cab heater and heated seats and a better stereo then whats in any of my vehicles. Now if was using it only for work id have probably bought something like a ranger 1000. Even they are capable of running briskly down a trail and can do even more work. Heck they even make rangers with air conditioning now. Just the thing for texas heat. .

I'm not going to debate the "raciest" life. Someone has to stay sane to document the insanity.  In the silent moments of reflection, we've sat around the fire and wondered aloud, "Why are am I still alive after all of the stoopid stuff I've done?"

In 1999 I bought a new Tacoma 4 cylinder because I don't drive over 55mph. :)

23 years later she finally turned up 84,000 miles.  8)

I drove fast in my younger years on the road. In the woods, and trails, I want to look.  I don't wanna miss anything. Lotta my friends were into bass boats, and ski rigs. I had a canoe, and saw things in the backwaters that even a flatbottom couldn't go.

I'm still that way. I never built a jeep to go mudding, or climb crazy hills. I like to ease into the back woods,  just to see what's there.

I drive the saem way now as I did when I first got my license ; years of learning the hard way has allowed me to judge what will or will not work.

I have stopped tail-gating on highways , more due to raised speed limits has reduce lines of cars on roadways, and in winter I never deep snow or icy conditions, lack of desire to get stuck had always made me drive to conditons. (putting top ranked  snow tires on all four has increased my rate travel though.)
Speed limit is what I think I can get away with with concern to traffic congestion, though speeding in heavy Chicago traffic never bothered me in the least.

On the rare occasion I am poking along compared to traffic,if a line of cars gets behind me, I will pull over and let them by.

A few years back we were coming through Dallas with my wife driving tucked in behind a semi truck  :o and a Texas state trooper stopped us for tailgating.
Nancy told him that we don't have all the space in Georgia that you have in Texas, so we have to scroonch up on the road.
He gave her a laugh and said please be more careful.

my need for speed came early. At 8 i raced snowmobiles and at 9 was racing motocross. By the time i was 12 i was racing against adults. Ive had MANY fast cars and even a few crotch rockets. Going fast on a bike on the street got old real fast. Even my car today is driven with abandon on the street. Yup I will run it through the gears on a desolate road but pretty much drive the speed limit when theres traffic. Ive only been in one bad wreck and that was a roll over when i passed out (drunk) at 22 and rolled over 3 times. Other then that the only other even close call was when I layed down  a Kawasaki crotch rocket when a deer ran out in front of me at about 65. Got it fixed and traded it in on my first harley. Ya ive been banged up racing bikes and snowmobiles but if your racing and claim you never have your probably not winning. My body is OLD. Ive had so many surgerys i wont bother listing them but none have come from going fast. My problems came from my time in the service. This old body has slowed down. Its why i traded that insanely fast turbo rzr for this general which by the way will out tow and out haul a mule or kubota. Hands down ride better and is fast enough for about any sane trail ride. My wifes shaking her head though. Old habits are hard to stop. I already put a clutch kit in it and a tune and an exhaust system. Not so much to go fast but to address some things i didnt like about the clutching for the most part. it was way to jerky going slow and had all kinds of granny limiters on it. They pipes? Well that i have no excuse for. Ive put cat back on every chev truck ive owned and the only reason the ram doesnt have one is they already knew what a truck should sound like. This general is a great machine. If you drive something like a mule (i have) and hopped in this thing its like the difference in a 70s 3/4 ton truck and a new cadilac. A base 4x4 mule will set you back about 14k a entry level general will set you back about 16k. No brainer if you ask me. Only reason i could see for even a farmer buying a mule is you can get them with a diesel and most farmers have there own tanks. Farmer we do crop damage for had two diesel mules and a kubota. When the two sons took over they kept one mule and bought a can am's (similar to the general) and a xp1000 ranger and for the most part the only thing the mule is used for is the kids. They about know how the kids would drive there can am and ranger. There ranger even has ac. They can close the door in the dust and stay cool while working. Same exact reason they own tractors and harvesters with cabs and ac. Man im glad im not a practical boring guy. worrying about gas milage or having to much hp is right up there to me with eating cow food instead of eating cows so i can stay alive for 2 more years.

And who does not say, "The posts we make on GBO are a tiny slice of who we are, that cumulatively taken, reflect a very good portion of our distinct personalities and unique characteristics"?

There is a large element of trith in the above statement.  Much of what we are, is what our cumulative experience molds us into.
Many of us when quite young, took risks while driving, often foolish risks.  ..but after seeing and/or experiencing the consequences of same, added that to our cumulative store of knowlege/experience.

When young, we tend to enjoy that wind inthe face and bumps on the butt, throwing up dirt, and admiring glances..from other more or less juvenile admirers.

Then as we live on, we handle things more cerebrally, understanding that the wind in the face and the dust flying , is just a matter o simple physics.

But if that thrills somebody, I have no complaints, except where they may endanger others.

The dangers I mentioned first off, is one occasionally seen around here, and most often happens to people operating snow machines off trail in darkness.  If the wire they run  into happens to have barbs, that only adds to the drama..

During and for a couple years after WW2, troops operating in Germany had to be careful of a similar situation, since even after the surrender, some Nazis were still "diehard" zealots.  As a result, since partisans often strung fine cables or wires across roads, GIs often installed "anti-decapitation' devices on their Jeeps..see photo below.

  Interesting side light;

" I just thank GOD id dont lead the boring life some others here have or give up on life when i turned 60. Im still a kid in a old mans body and like it that way."

Let's relax for a bit and meditate on that.  As Landowner said, we are all different personalities, and that is part of the true excitement of life.  Whether we can honestly pronounce another's life as boring, is highly doubtful.
For instance, I don't know how Elon Musk drives on the high way, even though he builds some of the fastest road cars in the world.   ...But I would bet that he gets a greater thrill, if a great idea for his Spacex endeavors comes to mind while he is driving.

Some folks find great joy in their children/grandchildren..or in the  accomplishment of developing that plant, musical piece or hand made item they have been working on.

In other words, I don't believe we cn pronounce another's life as boring..since we are not "wearing his shoes"...

my biggest change doesnt come from attitude or an old mind it comes from a beat up body. I cant even ride a harley more then a few miles today and its why i reluctantly sold mine. Cant drive motocross bikes and although I still have snowmobiles id bet i didnt put 200 miles on them this year and when i was young it was 2k and that was on top of racing every weekend. Even a 4 wheeler without power steering about kills me and even with it I wouldnt take mine on a trail ride. Its just to tough on the bod. Side by sides are eaiser on a trail then my jeep. You can fly over a washboard two track and hardly feel the bumps. My wife even laughed at me yesterday. We took the challenger out for the first time and went to town to shop (about 60miles) I didnt even go in the store and still had to have her drive home. This last hip and knee replacement are just not healing fast like the other replacements i had. That stupid left peddle wears on me. Told her i need to trade it on an automatic hellcat but she just rolled her eyes.

I drive 55 on the interstate, I putter around helping my wife as she turns the backyard into a beautiful flower garden, I sit on the bank to fish and watch Nancy put on rubber gloves to bait my hook because I shake too much to do it myself, we take short walks and hold hands, and we sit and talk for hours, and we worship together.
Boring life??     No a great life.
