Model 94 "w" designation.
« on: January 27, 2004, 04:36:29 PM »
Hi all!  I have a nice Win 94 made in 1941 according to the records the company kept. It's a 30wcf with a stamped w on the bottom of the action in front of the lever. Someone told me that it means the gun went back to get blued a second time but I can't find anything out about this. Apparently the Winchester factory had a fire in 1941 [or a little later] and all the records burnt up. Does anyone know about this?  I'm trying to determine whether I just have a pre '64 or is there something more interesting about this one?

:D Hello jhm&magyars4!
I finally got an answer about the "w" on my '94. It turns out that it does not add any value to the carbine and Winchester records after 300,000+ were destroyed in an accidental fire and therefore no one would know how many are out there. So what I have is a well worn pre '64 with nice walnut in good shape. That's all for now! I got this info from a fellow who posts on "Gunboards.com" Bert H. real knowledgeable about winchester guns.

Madis has a note that says that if the "w" is in a circle and is 3/16th" wide and 1/8" tall it  indicates a test part received from outside parties. 8)

:-)

hi guys,
The "w" is not encircled and is all by itself just below the serial number. I got my info from B. Hartman at Gunboards.com. He's pretty knowledgeabe about winchester leverguns.Anyway, the mystery now seems to be solved, thanks for looking into this for me.It appears I just have a good old pre '64 and that's all.
