It's cowboy boot weather again
« on: November 03, 2021, 05:11:16 AM »
44 degrees now with a forecast high of 46 today and I have to go into town so I broke out the Tony Lamas. I wear tennies, mesh in the summer, more substantial in spring and fall, until it get down into the low fifties as the boots are just too hot. My old dogs have become very temperature sensitive in the last few years. Too hot or too cold really makes them ache so I try to taylor my footwear to prevent that.

When isn't it?  I wear them pretty much year round except when it's gets slushy, salt will destroy a nice pair of boots.  I don't wear them with shorts either, but my kids and their friends do.  As a matter of fact they have a little business on weekends or after school doing Chores, yards work, handy work for people and they call themselves "Boys in Boots".  You would be surprised how much money they make doing such things...

I switch back and forth between Tony Lama boots, and Twisted X mocs. I also have a pair of lace up Justin's for snow and ice.

I'm with you, oldandslow. My everyday loafers aren't worth a nickel in winter. So it's back to the cowboy boots for me.

You might actually need those Justin's now that you have moved up north, kind of. I have a pair of fur lined Justin roper's for snow and ice but it has been several years since I have worn them. We haven't had much of either for years.

LOL, We got up here January 15 of this year. 1 serious snow storm, and 1 2 day blizzard.

I lived up here for 11 years, about 30 years ago. The weather weren't no surprise.  8)

I used to wear nuthin but Tony Lama boots. As I got older, old injuries came back to haunt me. Bad ankle, bad hip, two bad knees.
So the Twisted X mocs see a lot of use, but boots for certain occasions are dress up.

The only shoes I wore were western boots until I started going out to NM hunting every year. I drove through El Paso and the tony lama boot factory outlet store. So for the past 40 years I’ve mostly worn tony lama boots. That’s until old age set in. Now I need a shoe that I can get on without pulling on. So it’s mostly Clark slip on loaders. I’ve got a 3’ shoe horn and i can just slip then on with that shoe horn while I’m standing up.

High heels for men. At 6' 4" another 2" in boot heel is too much. A man's center of gravity is artificially raised. Tripping hazards increase as does the time delay to flail and stumble before hitting the pavement.

Yeah! I've got 6 pair.

LOL, I've never got out a tape and measured'em, but I don't think I've ever owned a pair of boots with 2" heels.
Also, at 6'3" its still a ways to the ground, and I can fall with the best of'em barefooted.  8)

I have a pair of cheapies that I bought years ago, at a truck stop.  I wear them occasionally, but it has to be dry weather, since the soles have cracked and they are not replaceable.  I have threatened for years, to use some sheet rubber if I can find some, and apply it with contact cemement.
Around here, wearing such boots would be very damaging, since anytime between November and April there is plenty of slush on roads streets and anywhere else traffic is found.  ..And that was most often made into slush, by a liberal application of salt, or other melting agent.

Leather boots can be used, so long as one is willing to slather on some kind of oil based product to protect  them.  For church or somewhere regular shoes should be worn..we just have to play hop-scotch between vehicle and the building.

In a tray near the door, I have a pair of rubber farm boots that I have cut down to about 8"..quick to slip on, even without use of hands.. and will cover most any slushy condition.

Farm boots like this, except mine are green...  https://www.galeton.com/repel-footwear-trade-plain-toe-rubber-boots/7930-product/?set=FreeShip_50&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrcuJlsf-8wIV6fvICh0XaAI4EAQYAiABEgITCfD_BwE&code=FREESHIP50&page=https://www.galeton.com/repel-footwear-trade-plain-toe-rubber-boots/7930-product/

If you think plain ol' salt water is hard on leather boots try some produce water from the oilfield. I wore Red Wing slip on Irish Setters and kept them in good shape with Huberd's Shoe Grease. I could usually get five years out of a pair of them and I waded around in a lot of the stuff. They didn't leak and were pretty easy to get out of if a glob of molten steel landed in the wrong place. With five water flood fields to take care of and being borrowed occassionally for another I replaced a lot of pipe and was always patching leaky welds and it all involved produce water. There would at times be crude oil included too. Not a nice enviroment for leather. In cold weather I carried a pair of Halliburton boots to change into when doing this or working in snow.

I've had a bunch of different ones, but
the ones that have lasted longer are
Justin. I used to wear the black " roach
killers" and had a pair that lasted through
3 resoles. I don't know of anyone within
an hour's drive that even knows what
resoleing is, much less what to do.
Pretty much limited to the wellington
type Justin work pull on and lace up.
Still have a pair of the black ones for
solemn occasions
Wide width anything is hard to find
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I used to keep a closet full of boots but am down to 4 pair. Two pair are over 20 years old. 0ne pair about 15, and one pair about 3 years old.
I seldom buy boots anymore, but when I do, I buy the higher end Tony Lamas, and I'm not as hard on'em as I used to be.

Back in 1957, I was stationed at Ft Sam Houston..and upon occasion, I would make it to some of my Texas buddies homes.
Back then, I stopped by Cpl Thompson's folks place.  Mr Thompson was a custom boot maker, and made some for the show business crowd.  He showed me a pair he had made, but the purchaser had never picked up.

They fit me perfectly..and I could have had them for $40..a real bargain, except an extra $40 for a GI in 1957, was rather tough to come by.

He showed me how he would cut the head and point off a spike, flatten the ends, shaped it and used the spike to reinforce the Arch.

As I recall, his shop was right at the end of the bridge over the Llano river.  Very nice folks !

Next day we went down over the bank to the river.  A drouth was going on, so many fish were caught in low spots..so this crazy GI decided to catch an Alligator Gar without using a hook or line .  I did catch one..although nicked my knuckles..  I got a photo..and turned him loose in the main course of the river.

For years, I had a pair of quasi-dress shoes, but wore ankle/hiking boots the rest of the time except at work where I wore lace-up lumber jack boots.

I bought tennis type shoes for the first time about five years ago but now they are, what is left of them, just garden shoes and I peed away too much money for leather every day shoes , (stay far, far away from New Balance shoes, they will ruin your feet).

I have two pair of lace-up dress boots I wear on occasion but as they are forty years old (bar cruising wear) time to get some new ones; my current lumber-jack (winter work) boots new a resole but have held up far better than any before them. -- (I have a pair of Red Wing shoes, but wear them rarely as if they get wet, they shrink and are misery until they stretch out again.)

The old saying you get what you pay for, is far, far more relevant than it was thirty years ago.

Dee, I didn't take you as a $400-500/pair of footwear kinda guy!  Nothing better than a quality pair of kicks...

I don't like cheap boots, cheap knives, cheap guns, or dink horses.
I like well made "silver bellies" too.
Its always been a weakness.

I've got another month to wait on a high end holster I've always wanted. There is a 3 to 4 month wait on that one, but I'll never need another one.

I'm with you, I don't like cheap anything, good deal is another thing entirely.  I went through the cheap route when I had to but realized that doesn't work out in the long run.
