I just read an article about matching targets to the kind of shooting you do. He then went on to say that sometimes you can improvise better targets for your needs than you might be able to buy. Im thinking of getting paper plates and spray painting the outer edges (the scalloped parts,) and leaving the inner circle white for 100 yard shooting with a 1.5-4.5 power scope. Anyone else have "improvised" targets that work for them? Just curious.

You can download and print your own from a number of sites. Remington Arms website has some nice ones in Adobe .pdf format.

In addition to paper, consider other types of targets. After the harvest season is done, I like to take my very ripe citrus out and use that for exploding targets. You can set them on a slope and shoot below to get them rolling and you can have moving targets with a few shooters trying for them.

In addition try whole orange claybirds and pieces of them with a contender at a bit of range. Makes for nice challanging and informal practice.

I just buy a ream of 11x17 paper. Stick orange dots on it, either 1" or 1 1/4" dots. If using a small caliber I will stick a Shoot and See 3" circle on the paper (the 3"ers are not that expensive, $4 for 30 at Wal-Mart).

one of my favorite improvised targets is to take a far too abundant wire hanger , straiten the hook , then grab the bottom strait and pull into a diamond shape. Attach black electrical tape in a cross and attach a square piece of paper to the center. Very cheap and effective.

This is not a target but I will throw it in anyhow. For a very portable target holder - go to your Real-estate people and buy - barrow - or steal (just kidding) one of those for sale signs that they use. Cut cardboard to fit inside of the frame and tape - staple the target to that. Works very well for a movable target holder. Plus very easy to insert into mother earth.

around here they are called crows :roll: In all seriousness, I use 2" square steel tube. Welded to form a bottom and up-rights 2"> x 1' ^ with a hole bored in the middle of the bottom member for a steel stake. I use 2"x2"'s to increase up-right height and tack orange constuction paper to. And use white sticky dots for aiming points( also could use a black felt marker). Bullet holes stand out real well.

a carton of chicken eggs works about as good as anything......cheap you can buy them anywhere. We even glue string to them and hang them on a frame I made............they make the best "reactive" target for a varmint gun there is short of the real thing.
