Fish in NY and PA
« on: April 10, 2021, 12:39:49 PM »
Last Tuesday I got my first bluefish of the season at Valentino pier in Brooklyn’s Red Hook section (NY). Today I took my first trout of the season, a beautiful Rainbow, out of Harvey’s Creek along Rte.29 in Luzerne Co., PA.
Life is good.

For that rainbow, did you catch it with a flyrod??
If so, what fly, nymph, or streamer did you use.
Most of mine were caught with a royal coachman wet, or black or olive wooly buggers.
Now I use night crawlers on a spinning rod. :)

Well what a coinkedinke. 8) . Today, I caught, saw, and held, my first ever Walleye.
They are a good looking fish. They tell me they taste better than crappie.

It's been a while since I've had bluefish, you've got me thinking I might have to take a trip to the ocean. I'm in the NH mountains but only about an hour and ten minutes or so from the seacoast. We have plenty of brookies, rainbows and even some browns in my area.

Bugeye: i was using a 13 ft. Tenkara fly rod with a bead head olive wooly bugger. There I was, moving slowly at 74, standing on a rock in the middle of the creek with a cane in one hand and waving a stick with the other. It was fun.

Dee: I get to fish for walleye for a few days once a year when I am shooting the pistol matches at Camp Perry in July. Was able to bring home a bunch of them last time out.
Good eating.

Double: The spring run for blues is on in NY. Stripers coming in.
I don’t know if the waters off Portland are earlier or later. Good luck if you go. I had success with the old standard Kastmaster with a bucktail.

They may become your favorite.
They are delicious.

DG, I have a 12ft flyrod that is sort of Tenkara.  I use it with 17lb chameleon and a 2ft leader and flick wooly buggers around.  Never tried bead heads, but occasionally pinch on a tiny split shot.

I had a braided tenkara line on (17lbs) and a six foot leader on and a 5x tippet.

I never felt the need for a tenkara line, I set the rod up for high sticking with the chameleon line and found that I could also fly cast an unweighted fly.

Understood. I have a few setups for that rod which involve more normal line/leader combos....15-20 feet of floating fly line, a similar amount of simple braided line, fifteen feet of 30lb mono and a short leader (does not cast as well as the others). One combo I have ready to go but have not used yet is fifteen feet of flexible, knottable titanium line...
Have yet to see about that.

Our bluefish arrive later than yours, they migrate north as the water warms so we'll have our turn soon. Same thing with the stripers.

Many years ago my brother in Florida smoked some bluefish that was really good.
I liked it as much as smoked salmon.
