Massive pileup traps drivers on Texas freeway
At least six people have died and dozens were injured in a 133-vehicle pileup in Texas after a massive ice storm made the roads dangerously slick in the early hours Thursday morning, authorities said.

The first crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 35W in Fort Worth. Vehicles, including 18-wheelers and passenger cars, skidded off the road and continued to crash into each other as the pileup grew.

"The scene we saw today is really, probably, unlike anything any of us have seen, and we pray to God we never see it again. Our hearts, our thoughts, our prayers go out to everyone negatively affected by this tragic incident," Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes told FOX 4 News.

A significant ice storm stretched across the southern and midwestern U.S., covering Texas, the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians as it continued to move through to the mid-Atlantic.

The rare icy conditions on the road caught drivers underprepared, leading to a catastrophic incident. Temperatures were in the 20s at the time of the initial crashes.

Local service Med Star transported at least 65 people for treatment at local hospitals, The Dallas Morning News reported.

A large number of victims were health care workers, found wearing their work scrubs and hospital badges, according to reports.

Hypothermia emerged as a significant concern as rescue efforts continued. First responders found it difficult to reach potential victims due to the same icy conditions that caused the crash.

Noakes said that at least four police officers were injured during rescue efforts. The immense operation included 26 fire department vehicles, 80 police cars and 13 ambulances across the half-mile crash zone.

Some lawmakers questioned if the area had been salted or sanded before the crash, with some reports indicating that the roads had not been prepared.

JERSEY CITY FIRE KILLS 2 CHILDREN, INVESTIGATORS SAY

North Tarrant Express, a local agency that operates Interstate 35W, said that maintenance crews had started pretreating the lanes on Tuesday morning in anticipation of inclement weather.

"This tragedy deserves an immediate and thorough investigation," State Rep. Ramon Romero Jr., tweeted. "This inclement weather was foreseeable and lives were lost because a private company didn’t uphold its end of the deal."

Ramon said his office would open an investigation into the allegations and work with the Texas Department of Transportation to determine the truth.

Well, gee whiz, another politician trying for air time and to waste taxpayer money on an investigation. One of my grandsons and his wife are in Dallas this week and know the place where this happened. It's because of a poorly designed highway where the drivers couldn't see what was in front of them until too late. Can't have the state take the blame for this so blame the maintenance company.

When I saw "finger pointing", I just assumed that they were going to blame our president (not Biden).

I figure with the way weather forecasters talk about the weather these days, that there was warning of freezing rain and ice on roads. Enough warning that road crews should have had salt on the roads. My, guess is this road had not been salted or there would not have been the layer of ice that was on it.  It was said the responders could not even walk on the road there was so much ice.   Looks like a pretty busy highway to not have been salted, so I think the first finger pointing should be toward the TX DOT.

Finger pointing is a good description
of what's going on.
Everybody looking for someone to sue.
This has been announced and planned
for and prepared for and announced
and re- announced for more than a
week ahead of time.
Just like the floods and high winds
and tornadoes and everything else
we have here.
There's a road intersection a couple
of miles from here that dips under
a railroad overpass,  and every time
we have a hard rain,  it floods to
around a 5 foot depth. It just does.
Not by any plot or plan. It floods
until the water can drain away which
it does.
Yet every year, maybe a couple of
times, somebody runs their car off
into it and ruins their car at the least,
sometimes they might have to be
hospitalized or maybe buried.
Plenty of public warnings about
flood waters, public cautions,
signs everywhere at the trouble spots,
most of the spots are common
knowledge. But the mess still
happens year after year.
The big difference between when I
was young and now is that
lawsuits are pretty much SOP for
living life in the 21st century. I
can't make it a month anymore
without hearing somebody talking
about waiting on a settlement, or
complaining about how long their
settlement is taking.

Tragedy isn't always somebody's
negligence that can be sued for
no matter what the legal jackals say

Do the people in Texas not pay lots of taxes that go toward road maintenance?  Does this road maintenance that people pay for,  not include salting roadways in the winter so roads are safe to travel?  We all know state DOT's can't be sued for neglecting roadways, while tax payer money is squandered in meaningless ways, which state DOT"s are good at doing.  133 cars and trucks piling up on an interstate, with people killed, due to ice buildup that most likely could have been prevented is nothing to just brush off and say oh well. Especially if it was one of your family members killed or involved.  The highway where it happened was even a toll road.  So I'm sure there was lots of money at their disposal to salt the highway, especially since ice in Texas isn't something that happens often.  I'm not at all for many of the lawsuits that happen, but when Tax payers are paying lots of money to the state to keep their roads maintained, and safe. Plus they pay a toll for traveling on that particular highway. Someone needs to be held accountable for not having salted the highway, where 133 cars pile up, getting 6 killed and many others injured.

Crews have been out at all
hours treating roads all over
the DFW area for days before
and after.

The world isn't accident proof and
can't be made so with any amount
of money

Ranger, Lubbock has some road flood places like that.  About three feet deep, and idiots in these little cars try to make it through that. Some of them going to fast skip like a rock across the top and hit other cars.

I immediately suspected "black ice".... encountered by drivers who are unaccustomed to watch for it !

here have been on radio and television
asking that everyone stay off the roads.
Have been for days
