Commercial robotics . They have almost eliminated that jerky movement. And they are free standing and walking. But the prosthetic applications are incredible. Even for those confined in a wheel chair for life.
And home nurseing. Japan is looking more into the companion side of it.

Ranger, I didnt want to say that, but you are right about Japan. Russia is doing the thing also.
I prefer the prosthetics and the home nurseing approach. The companionship only is good also.
Both for the older men and women. Helping them, and what looks like a human , sitting and listening to them.
And responding. Robin Williams said that before he killed himself , that was all he wanted .

nurses.  I had to get a service
to help out with my mother
before she passed. I thought
they did a really great job and
only had 1 problem. A phone
call took care of that and they
didn't send that one again

It's primary function would have been for your mother. And you. And, they can call 911. But I'm about 20 years behind reality.
