By Michael Hollan | Fox News

It’s looking like it’s going to be a busy hunting season.

According to multiple states, significantly more people than usual have applied for hunting licenses, likely due to a desire to get outside after the coronavirus pandemic forced many to cancel summer plans. Of course, more hunters means that more people are going to be shopping for guns and ammunition and some stores are reporting difficulty in keeping up with the demand.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported making $900,000 on the first day of hunting licensing and permitting. In 2019, that number was only $300,000. (iStock)

It’s not just the higher demand for hunting that’s causing the shortage, WSAV reports. During the early months of the pandemic, store owners reported an increase in ammunition sales as well. According to some owners, they’re still feeling the impact from that time period.

Kayton Smith, who owns Pooler Guns in Georgia, explained to the news outlet, “During the May and June months, everyone bought up all the ammunition that was being made so there is very little ammunition currently available. Even things like the 270 bullets, I got an order of 20 boxes and they sold out in three days.”

On top of that, this year has seen a significant increase in the demand for hunting permits and licenses. According to KXAN, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported making $900,000 on the first day of hunting licensing and permitting. In 2019, that number was only $300,000.

“The hunting season hasn’t had that big of an impact in gun sales in years, but with folks being homebound — they’re sick of that,” Tim Kinton of Kinton Guns in Farmington, NY, explained to KXAN.

While he also reported a shortage of ammunition, he said he doesn’t think it will have too much of an impact on hunting season. On the other hand, he also said he doesn’t expect the problem to go away anytime soon.

300 Win Mag is hard to find. Thank goodness I stocked up a fairly good supply of it before all this happened

I dont think the shortage has as much to do with stocking up for hunting season as it has  fear of a Biden Harris  administration .

I think it's a little of the former and a lot of the later...

All said and done I really don't
"need " any ammo for the season.
I have a decent supply, and can
only kill 4 deer in the county I'm
hunting, so I'll most likely just
need 4 shells.
I have been trying to work up a
load for my nephew's gun that
recently became maxed, and I
didn't have the amount of powder
I thought I had. I loaded some
test loads this evening and I
had just enough to load those
with roughly 1/4 of a teaspoon
left over. I have 10 rounds from
the 1st load work up that will suffice
to hunt with, but I really had wanted
to refine things a bit more and
have him some tailored ammo to
go with the gun. I guess all that
will come later. Not really a big deal
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I did a little looking around and '06, .270 Win and .30-30 don't seem at all hard to find.  I suppose if you're hunting with something less common, it could be a different story.

Assuming I could still walk well enough to go hunting, I've got more ammo in all the calibers I shoot to hunt for the rest of my life.

I probably have all the ammunition I'll ever need, but I'd like to have the option of buying more if I wanted to.

As someone has said, this is like the toilet paper shortage.

Panic buyers, and hoarders can only afford, and store so much ammo before demand goes down.

Depending on a "favorable election" I think it will get easier to get, and more affordable.

Ive got enough loaded ammo and components on the shelf to keep a hundred hunters in the woods for the rest of there lives. I have not a bit of sympathy for people who dont even have a box or two of ammo put away for there deer rifle. I hope its epidemic by deer season so theres  many less hunters in the woods trying to shoot my deer. Cant afford to buy 10 boxes of ammo for 300 bucks but have  1000 dollar cell phones. Yup i feel for them ::)
