Is 22" sufficient or should I go with 24"? I will be shooting both factory and hotter loads. Thanks!

This is my un-educated opinion - I have both and I really like each of them for what they do.  When I am deer hunting in timber I will almost always take my 22" A-Bolt.  It is light and easy to pack around and it is quick to get on target.   If I am gong to be working clearcuts or long ranges in the canyon country I will opt for my Sako 24".

A couple of differences that I have noted:
  1. I believe the velocity and energy are a bit better from the long barrel than from the shorter barrel - really minor but that is my perception.
  2. I KNOW the Sako has better accuracy beyond 200 yards - more weight - longer barrel - tighter groups.

It still really comes down to getting the one that you prefer - that one that makes you comfortable...  I also think your choice of the 270 is a great decision - It is a great all-around.  Jack O'Conner labeled it a "poor man's magmum"  The ballistics of a 270 are not that far behind the Remington 7mm Mag. - Great caliber.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Generally speaking, I would always take a 24" barrel over a 22".  I dont see that the extra 2 inches is any problem to carry and it generally adds velocity in most situations.

I agree with longwinters.  I prefer 24" barrels.  I too have an A-Bolt in .270 that has a 22" barrel, and I always wished that it had a 24" barrel.  I don't think that it makes much of a difference, but for what its worth, I would get it with a 22" barrel.

I see Browning is putting 23" barrels on their WSM rifles.  I'd like to see this become the new standard length.  I think it's a great compromise between the 22" and 24".

schunter1128,

Suggest you go with a 24" to 26" barrel .270 winchester.

If you want a 22" barrel short rifle suggest you go with a short action 7mm or .308.
