Lubing the bolt: dry powder lube?
« on: July 01, 2013, 05:02:35 AM »

I have a bolt action rifle, where the metal is so hard that the bolt really drags/sticks as you operate it.  I am thinking of using a dry powder lube on it, instead of grease, because I fear getting grease on the bolt face, creating dangerous pressure.

Does anybody have a preferred dry lube that they use for bolts?

Is there any special way to put it on, or any special concern about getting the powder on the face of the bolt?

Thanks for all info and advice.

If it's that tough to mess with you might look into polishing it a bit. The bad part with a powder lube, let's say graphite, is you generally don't get corrosion protection. You might want to read up on silicone spray and see if it has any corrosion resistance. I use it on the inside of an AR receiver, but that's aluminum. The bolt is oiled with eezox. Silicone spray dries into a film, but like I said I don't know if it will prevent rust or not.

I would lube the lugs ONCE then remove and clean the bolt until no extra lube is on the bolt face or lugs when it is inserted and removed. Then oil the bolt as normal. I would think hard steel would drag less than soft. The surface condition might be the problem on the rails or bolt. The polishing might be a good idea.
